car jerks in 5th gear low throttle

I've noticed this when my car hat around 55k miles on it, now it has 89k miles.

The issue is basically when I cruize at 55 to 65mph range, in 5th gear (automatic) with a light pressure on the accelerator engine revs at around 1800-2000rpm, the car feels like it lets off the gas, then back on, but it's really rough. Significantly worse than if I was to let off the gas and push it back down. The issue usually occurs once or twice, not long after the car was started (within the first 15minutes), after everything has been running for a while, I've never noticed it.

for a while I thought the car was trying to grab 4th, then decide not to and slam it back into 5th, but the rpms didn't seem to budge.

I am also not moving my foot at all on the throttle, and the road is completely flat, not up or down hill.

Have any of you experienced anything like this? I will be going in for my 90k miles tuneup early next month, so I'll bring it up with my tech guy at Acura.

thanks.

Normal. Any 2nd gen cl/tl I've driven does it, or at least I've made them do it.

well I didn't think it was the TQ, because my rpms would have varried, and also since it was at very low throttle, i don't expect it was "slipping" much, so a lock unlock wouldn't have jerked.

I mean my car's been doing that for about a year, but today's scenario seemed "rougher" than usual, i mean it totally felt like it was a noob shifting from 3rd to 2nd or something, except it's a damn automatic, and was in 5th gear.

this car's got a really "weird" tranny, I can't believe how hard it surges forward when the A/C compressor kicks in. I told that to the mechanic, he basically said "ya that's normal, the ac requires power from the engine so it revs up a bit and that causes that". Wow, fantastic explanation guy, I thought A/C was God's gift and my car magically cooled down. I also explained to him that I've owned 3 other automatic cars, None have done that. Heck even the stickshifts in 1st gear just rolling off the throttle wouldn't buck as hard as this thing.

(sorry i'm going off topic on my own thread here).

On the AC drain, I've driven several cars that do that also.

Sounds similar to the issue I had and it was the tranny. After a cold start, I would be cruising along in 5th, applying constant throttle, and the revs would blip ever so slightly and I would feel a slight surging effect every now and then. Also, while in slow moving traffic and in gears 3 or higher (with torque converter lock up) and applying very light throttle, I could put the car into a slight shake.

I recommend having Acura check out your tranny after a cold start and after warmup. Also have them check the tranny fluid for abmornal particles.

I was experiencing the same and i was told by a AZ enthusiast from the dealer, young fellow. That it does that because its trying to cut of fuel when in 5th gear. he explains that the car(all 6 cylinder honda, tsx, cl, tl 2nd and 3rd generation) (has an deactivator)is set up to shut of two cylinders or one in the tsx in cruise mode if at a constant speed without any acceleration to save on gas mileage. then when it senses acceleration again it comes back on...

That is total BS! There is NO cylinder deactivation in a 2nd gen CL/TL.

ya I'm with you Fuzzy, that's total bs. this isn't the caddy northstar engine. the only way you're banging on 2 less cylinders if if you pull the sparkpluggs. hahaah

I'll do the 90k mileage check up, where i assume they will do some fluid changing/ checking, and i'll report back next months if anything has improved.

thanks for the feedback

My 6 Speed does this as well, i guess it's not the automatic trans issues, to me it feels like the EGR system may be partially blocked, On the 3.5 Pilots and Odysseys there is a TSB about the egr valve not opening and closing smoothly at highway cruise under light load, if you watch a line graph of the EGR VLS sensor you can see it is very erratic and it feels like the trans slipping or engine missing. The fix is a new EGR valve and removing the plate on top of the intake plenum and cleaning the 6 small holes and valleys with TB Cleaner.

I am going to take mine for a test drive with the scan tool hooked up and do a snapshot of the EGR when the problem occurs and see if my line graph looks erratic.
