Bent- AC compressor pulley.

Is the only way to fix my squeaky car is to replace the whole AC compressor? I took it in and the shop said it was a bent pulley causing the squeaking belt sound and the only way to stop it was to replace a perfectly working AC compressor. Can you unbend the pulley?
What are the risk if I continue to drive?
Also, 650.00 is what they quoted ..does that seem far if it is the only way?

Oh, and I had the belt changed without success.

Thanks for the help.. It just seems funny because my AC works great.

Could be the "bent pulley" is causing wear on the bearings in the AC compressor. I would question why the pulley is bent in the first place.

You can change the clutch and stator with out replacing the compressor

Yes, it is possible to replace the compressor clutch and coil without replacing the whole compressor. It is a tad more labor intensive, but can save you a bit more money.
I would also be wondering why the pulley is bent to begin with and confirm that it is in fact making that noise.

I think they mean the auto tensioner pulley that is spring loaded is probably wearing out and not putting enough pressure on the belt.

When u kick the ad on this puts load on the belt and if there is not sufficient tension it will then slip. It's less likely to slip when the car is all heated up but still that does not fix the issue.

My guess it ur auto tensioner pulley is weak and does not apply enough load to the belt to prevent it from slipping when the ac turns on.

I will agree with CL-S progression. I've seen a hell of a lot more auto-tensioners fail than I've seen bent A/C compressor pulleys. Come to think of it, I've never seen a bent compressor pulley; and I work on a lot of cars. Serpentine belt auto-tensioners are definitely a common fail point!

If the pulley is loosening. It likely would be squeaking. It will also deform the belt so when u take it off it may look all bent and warped.

The auto tensioner will still have tension but it's just not strong enough anyone to push the slack out of the belt to prevent it from slipping anymore.

Anyone know where i can get the clutch assembly from or do i have to change the whole compressor? The ac works fine but the clicking and pulley spins but the inside sticks occasionally when the ac is running.

The inside suppose to stick, thats when the clutch is engaging and it's suppose to click during engagement.

You can get one from az sponsors here.

#8 and/or 11 depends on what you need.

You might want to change the belt(s) if it's old, since it's coming off anyways.

Ahh you do know that has nothing to do with the ac?

That's the crank shaft pulley. Probably doesn't have a cover, unless you are talking about the fender splash shield.

From the video it looks and sounds normal to me.

1. The center is suppose to stick (cycle off), center stopping and the outer keeps spinning. This is when the ac is cycling off or not cooling bc the cabin is cool enough.

2. The center turn with the outer pulley (cycle on), inner and outer spinning together. This is when the ac is cycling on or cooling.

In other words, the clutch-center of pulley (compressor) is not suppose to be on all the time (center and outer pulley). It is suppose to be constantly cycling on and off all the time.

However, you can over ride the clutch by turning on the ac (coldest setting) and recirculation at the same time and the clutch should engage all the time (center and outer pulley spinning together at the same time).

Since you said the ac is working fine, I don't think you have a problem, unless the pulley is making an abnormal noise or belt is slipping.

Yes I hear the noise now. I'll suggest you get one of those mechanic stethoscope to pinpoint the bad pulley or whatever it is.
