01 CL-S Tune-up

Good afternoon. I bought an 01 CL-S in November and it now currently has 82k-ish miles. I've done some basic maintenance like the oil change and coolant flush, but I'm wondering what other things I should probably replace, fill, clean, etc.

I know I'll need to do an AV6 trans swap, spark plugs, and tires. Anything else I should hit since this car probably hasn't been consistently serviced in years.

  • Maybe a little bit of seafoam in the engine through a vacuum line.
  • Definitely check the condition of the timing belt, and check that it's in time.
  • Valve adjustment is always good to do if it hasn't been done in awhile.
  • Check the condition of the serpentine & power steering belt.
  • Maybe check the auto trans solenoid filters to see if they're clogged.
  • Maybe check the knock sensor to see how the wire is holding up, and possibly replace the sensor itself as the plastic housing tends to easily break off due to constant heat cycles.
  • Definitely clean the EGR passages in the intake, and if you're willing to take the front intake runners off, that port as well. Remove the EGR unit itself, clean out the ports.
  • Nothing like spending a day detailing the interior with a vacuum & a wetvac.

All I can think of.

Spark plugs, air filter and cabin filter are pretty well known. Nobody ever talks about the in-tank fuel filter, pcv valve, thermostat and radiator cap. There is no set interval. But, they are worth replacing if they haven't been done.

I should replace all of those, you’re saying? Aside from the air filters which obviously need to be replaced.

Something to consider if you plan to keep for a while.

When I say fuel filter I mean the one that is $30ish on rockuto. You'd have to be comfortable removing the pump to do that.

+1 on all these things. Most of them you can just inspect and see if they're good or not. Thermostat you can test with boiling water.

But I'd especially recommend changing the cabin air filter. It's a breath of fresh air. It's cheap, super easy, and you won't realize how much better the air quality is until you've replaced, especially if you have bad seasonal allergies like I do. It's like trying on a nasal strips for the first time. Never realized how much you couldn't breathe without it.
The best part about it though, is if it's never been done. You have to break the studs on the plastic housing, swing open the door, and behold what is in the filters. For me, it was like a squirrel had nested in it. So much dust, fur, sticks, leaves, and I think even a couple of acorns. So be prepared with a vacuum. If it has been done before, the studs will have already been broken. But even a year after doing mine, I think it's time to do again.

I would also bleed the brakes and power steering fluid but that's just me. Most people don't bother.

Timing belt/water pump! Asin brand is the best choice. Do not take a chance if it has not been changed recently.
