wheel paint and curb rash fix
This is my first time trying this, so don't be too critical, I also started with the worst curb rashed wheel, so hopefully the others will look better.
these are my "winter" set but they are just all season on there for now. Decided I'll try to get rid of some the curb rash and repaint them while I was at it.
parts list:
-simple green
-320 sanding block, 1000 paper
-wheel primer
-duplicolor wet/dry sandable primer
-duplicolor graphite wheel paint
-lots of index cards
-3M spot putty
remove center caps and tape up stem and lug holes, sanded with 320, spot dremel sanded on the curb rash, filled with spot putty, let dry and sand, then 2nd coating (tip use a plastic razor blade). then sand again all with 320 then 1000 on the putty.
primed 3 coats, didn't sand it after, although I probably should have.
painted 2 light coats, 1 medium wet coat, you can still see the deep gouge, but I will try to spot fill again, it was about 1/4" deep. not bad though for my first pass at it.

i did the same to mine. probably would have been easier if I removed the tire first. The only thing that kinda sucks is if you curb them up again itll show the pink bondo haha then it looks ghetto

There is a material on the market called Lab Metal. Its similar to bondo in that it can fill cracks and gouges. The difference is that you can powdercoat over it. You cant powdercoat over bondo.

wasn't too hard, just have patience, the hardest part are the deep gouges where the metal protrudes up that you have to sand down. put a little of the bondo at a time and let it dry. and utilize the sandable primer

I used it when I worked for Alt*c Industries ( had to use the * since i signed a 5 year agreement not to disclose processes) we used it for weld porosity and minor dents before powder coating the parts.
One of the best ways I've found on wheel repair is to file the area smooth then mask it and use a high bulid primer, hvlp on closed fan pattern low material,no reduction(can be done with high build can primer)and a heat gun on low to basicly dry spray it into the imprifections and bulid it up then do normal coats, ley dry and sand smooth, no filler needed unless there's deep ones in the 2mm+ range.
Lab metal, Permatex and JB weld work great also.
And nice diy btw! I would be a little concerned about the spot putty since its not as strong as other fillers, make sure on your next tire change they use a touch-less changer, or that will be another diy in the future, lol.

here are the finished wheels, my 2-4th wheels came out a lot better than the first, but I redid it and decided to forgo the clear coat since the wheel paint was glossy enough for me.

I would spray the clear just for a little extra protection. Depending on where you get your paint, they should have matte, semi-gloss and gloss clears available.

Clear coat is a must to protect all that hard work you did, nice job

Im wanting to change the color of my winter wheels too. Theyre 3G five spokes. No curb damage, just some scuffs. But the bright silver isn't doing it for me.

Yea, thats what I was thinking. I wouldn't do black because thats just too much, but graphite/anthracite/something else should look good.

Yea. Dont get the spray can, its not as effective as the jar that you brush on. But, depending on the clear coat used, it may not be effective at all.
Ive used this one, but I dont remember spending $40 on it

Also, where a mask. That shit'll make you high as a kite and then want to vomit.

I was thinking the same, I wanted to get mine powdercoated but seeing as I only paid ~600 for them, I might try the DIY paint. not sure if you're referring to the guy who sold his off a 2g tl, but they did look decent.
sorry, my browser won't let me resize for some reasons.
