Tyler's CL-S6 - Progress Thread

I figured I'd start a progress thread on the 2G CL side and introduce myself.

As some of you frequent Car Talkers know, I picked up a SSM CL-S6 exactly 1 week ago and loving it already. I have Form and Function coilovers coming next week and plan on picking up Comptech axlebacks & having mild exhaust work done.

Keeping it simple and clean for now. Sooner or later, I'll turn into something similar to my 7G Accord (RIP)

Here's how my current ride sits as of right now:

More pics to come.

Wheels were gone shortly after my Accord was totaled.

I do have plans for wheels eventually, I'm mainly going to focus on suspension, mild bolt-ons and subtle changes on the exterior (Debadging, refinishing the rear bumper, etc).

Car is great so far, managed 24mpg with my foot through the floor half of the time.

SE-R had boat loads of torque (made about 250wtq @ 3000rpm), makes my CL-S feel pretty weak. The CL-S feels just about the same up top and in my opinion, has a much nicer engine note.

Interior quality, CL-S feels much nicer with less interior rattles. Interior feels a bit dated, but hey .. can't have everything for 6 grand.

Coilovers should arrive on Saturday, I'm guessing they'll be on this weekend if FedEx tracking is correct.

I've noticed the car has a slight wobble on the steering wheel under hard acceleration after putting these coilovers on.

I checked all bolts and they seem snug (lugs, top hat & strut tower nuts, wishbone, etc).

Maybe it's time for axle replacement? The car rides perfectly smooth while accelerating lightly at any speed.

Opinions?

I've heard about axels causing problems too but I was probably slightly lower than you and went 30k with no problems. Sway bar endlinks tight ?

Update: I raised the car about 3/8 of an inch and the wobble has gone down considerably, I'm betting the axles are getting a bit tired.

Here are some pics with my Sony 5N w/ 16mm 2.8f,

Put some TLC into the car today;

1: Changed out the transmission fluid to GM Syncromesh FM - amazing difference, shifts feel like a hot knife through butter. Car shifted pretty good before, but now it's perfect.

2: Removed the resonator on the stock airbox & added a high flow K&N filter - butt dyno suggests I picked up maybe 1 / 2hp and the engine note sounds great.

3: Replaced a broken RSB linkage on the driverside - car feels a bit more planted, not very noticeable.

4: Washed, waxed and detailed the interior - also hit a few spots with touchup paint from being low

I don't really have any big plans for it right now, but I'll make sure to post updates whenever they do come around.

Thanks for reading.

Quick update:

Ordered new front slotted rotors & pads - also, getting a set of 4 Hankook V12 summer tires installed tomorrow with an alignment. Corsport shifter bushings are on the way too!

No real performance mods planned until I get the essentials taken care of:

- Replacement OEM Axles
- New motor & transmission mounts
- Clutch & Flywheel - LUK clutch already sitting collecting dust - need to decide whether if I should get the OEM flywheel resurfaced or buy aftermarket (lightweight).

Currently, my CLS6 just rolled over to 137,000 miles and it's holding up quite well - I recently took a 1500 mile roadtrip to Utah and the car didn't skip a beat or give me any issue(s) whatsoever. The original clutch was really put to the test on my return trip back when there was a fatal collision on the i15 just outside of Baker, Nevada which caused a total freeway closure. This resulted in a 20 mile traffic stand-still and it was almost entirely uphill - added 4 hours of stop & go traffic to my trip back home. I am still amazed the clutch didn't give me any problems

Car managed 31mpg on the trip there, 26mpg on the way back.

I would say they ride pretty good, but nowhere near stock. Ride can be bouncy and you always have to be on pothole patrol - other than that, I can't complain for the price I got them for.

It was an absolute blast. The elevation in that area was around 5000ft so you could definitely feel the altitude, car was down on power a bit but the roads were silky smooth, very little traffic and I didn't see a single highway patrol cruiser. Very fun indeed.

This weekend was great for the CL - I got the Stoptech rotors installed along with some new Hawk HPS pads. Did 4 x 60mph - 10mph consecutive stops for the bed-in and these things bite pretty hard, much better than stock.

Also, managed to pickup and install a Comptech-B pipe & Corsport shifter bushings. Bushings really improved shifter feel and the B-pipe gave me a few ponies on the buttdyno.

Next is going to be headers & mufflers to finish the exhaust.

Update:

It all started out as testing the waters and seeing what kind of interest I had in my CL-S6 .. and the next thing I know I'm filling out the seller's portion of the title. Car is out of my hands and it was a great ride while it lasted. I referred the buyer to this forum since it has such a wealth of information - I also told him to take over my thread where I left off.

Farewell to the CL side of AZ - appreciate the feedback & answers to any of the questions I had.

Now it's time to car shop yet again.

Thanks Matt,

I sold the CL-S6 about 5 months ago and you bet I still miss it.

I still keep in touch with the current owner and see the car every once in awhile - brings back memories .

Here's a few pics of how my new ride currently sits today

Thanks for reading.
