WOW….Escort is getting desperate for detector sales

They seem to be comparing their 8500 to some other detector.
I don’t know which one because it’s not clearly shown.

Problem is, I guess they were too busy writing out checks to reviewers to proof read the AD copy.
They seem to “win” every category against the “mystery competitor”, but fail to label the individual test criteria.

This is an unedited scan from the July 22nd AutoWeek magazine.

What the hell is a graphical signal counter, and why would you want to count with something other than numbers?

They consider the eight light signal strength meter on the V1 as "1 signal strength meter". So what do they mean by "8 signal strength meters"?

The Passport comes with a remote module? And maybe a headphone jack?

Man, that's funny. Almost worth buying a copy of Autoweek.

Wow, that's really pathetic of Escort. The least they could have done was labeled their categories.

Have you noticed that everyone compares themselves to the real winner? How many times have you seen an off-brand detector say "we're better than Escort"?

It keeps track of the signal strength of 8 possible radar/laser detections. So if 2 cops are on your ass & 6 grocery stores are nearby, you can tell how strong all of them are at the same time

The 8500 has basically a "bogey" counter, like the V1 except it's the bar graph type, instead of the number of threats the V1 displays. It does work well, & has the bands of each, but the 8500 still doesn't have the directional arrows. And they don't tell you it can only be turned on in the expert programming mode, & even the manual says it for "expert use"

Could it be that you have a misprinted copy? I looked at that very same advertisement in my AutoWeek and the categories are there. My copy does not have that solid color. Granted, the V1 is shaded in my copy, but that's what they do to save copy right fees.

Well I have the 8500 and I love it personaly...I am not saying its better than the V1 but for me it was...They both do there job well and I think the 8500 is better looking and it was a little cheeper. I know it doesnt matter how a radar looks but I felt since they both were at the top of the detector class then it would be just fine. Some times I feel I would like the arrows but its ok...if it goes off I slow down no biggie. One thing I did like about the 8500 is the option to turn off the x band. Cops dont use it here and it has less false alarms due to doors

My copy of AutoWeek also had the categories listed.
There were no blue bars in my copy.

I did think it was funny that they wouldn't identify the mystery competitor but it's outline is unmistakably V1. I understand the license fee thing though.

Regardless of which is better, because we've been through that so many times, I'm just glad that there is competition in the marketplace to make them better and cheaper for all of us.

You can do that with the V1 too.
There’s a special programming mode you can go into with all kinds off settings.
You can turn off different bands, LASER, adjust alarm sensitivity and such.

I’m not drumming up the “WHICH IS BETTER” argument. I just thought the mistake was FUNNY.

My V1 I can turn off X, K, KA, Laser if I wanted. It has all the features of the Passport, and more. Plus it never goes off on doors. My passport 8500 when I had it, always went off alot with falses.

Putting aside all the bullshit, my 8500 has saved my ass many times. I don't have anything bad to say about it. Advertising is a game of words. Companies hire these ad people to come up with this bullshit. The best comparison is to try them yourself. Most companies will give you a money back gurantee. Check it out!

Ehhh I dont care what is better or not...my 8500 looks good suits my needs and saved my ass a ton of times already...and I got it for a used price but new in the box so I couldnt pass it up. The V1 might be a little better and have a few more options but I dont care...they both pick out the pigs and thats the big picture

Does the V1 show you the actual frequency of the radar its picking up?

I just leave my 8500 in the frequency display mode. I have all of the typical false alarm frequencies memorized so I know when I need to slow down by checking the frequency displayed. I've found most of the city cops all use radars within a very narrow frequency range.

State troopers seem to use radars in a different frequency range from the city police.

It'll probably go to page 3 before anyone notices.

V1 vs 8500 is like Sprint vs Verizon.
