My friend says when he gets his car chipped (VW 1.8) it'll be pushing 220 (crank / whp?) and that he'll beat me and wants to race me from a 2nd gear roll... I'm doubting him but he's sure he'll beat me - what do you guys think?

He wants to race until the end of 2nd gear...

Thoughts?

I dont think jettas can come any where near a cl-s 6 speeder, stock 1.8t's only have 180 hp, a chip isnt going to add 40 and even if it did have 220, i think you would still win. The v6 jetta engine only has 200hp btw.

I think you'll smoke him but check this out... My friend has a '04 Jetta GLI w/ the 1.8T. He's got a Greddy blow-off valve and a CAI (not sure what kind) other than that. We raced at a light one day from a stop. He was power braking right before the light turned green to keep the boost up I'm guessing... Anyway, I just sat there in my car ('01 5AT) waiting for the light to turn green. Light turns green, I nail it but not to the floor. I notice he's gaining about half a car length on me so I punch it to the floor. Once 2nd kicked in it was byebye Jetta... We slowed down when we hit 65mph or so though... Speed limit was only 35mph.. oops! hehe

In my Girls 6spd, depending on how fast she's moving already, it will take off in 2nd so i think you'll smoke him. Then again, you say he's pushin' 220? That's crank hp BTW

Oh yeah... Is your friend's an AT or 6spd?

1.8t?? chipped..hmmm when his ecu gets chipped that means he'll be boosting higher psi ... this could be a good race...if he has intake/dp/exhaaust i think he'll be able to take you, his car is lighter also....

That’s a pretty serious chip. If he’s getting an extra 40 hp (crank, by the way – he can’t get 220 at the wheels without a lot of other modifications) from an otherwise stock 1.8T, he’s pushing the limits. I think it really comes down to what kind of tranny he has – the 2nd on my car can go up to about 70 (with the chip), and your’s can go even higher. Going to the end of 2nd gear is kind of a strange qualification – is this the end of both car’s 2nd gear? If so, you’ll automatically win, since your top speed is higher than his in 2nd. Either way, I seriously doubt his 0-60 time is much lower than 6.5 (maybe 6.3 or so), so from a standstill, you should take him, and from a rolling 2nd, it all ends up in the hands of gearing. I wouldn’t lay down a whole bunch of cash in a bet, but I’d think you should

I'm confused now... Does he just want to see who can go the fastest in 2nd gear or who can top out in it first? Ok, ok, this is a weird race to begin with....

Does your friend have the AT, 5spd, or the 6spd in the Jetta? I think only the GLI has the 6spd...

Wow - thanks for the comments - i definately feel better now.

He's a 5 speed 1.8T jetta with just a chip modification. The race will be from a 40km/hr to 100km/hr (sorry metric)... i think 2nd gear at 40km/r is a good sweet spot for the cl-s.

i'll let you know how the race results end up - it will be in a few weeks as he hasn't got the chip installed yet, but i wanted to be able to make him think twice about the challenge.

If he's getting JUST the chip, you'll beat him. It's only 220 to the crank. So you'll beat him. A couple of friends of mine with Jettas thought they could beat me. Only one of them beat me though. He had an intake, straight pipe, APR chip, forged DV, and something else, and he had me by half a car length.

We agreed to loser buys winner a six pack. On the way home from work last nite I noticed 2nd gear at 40km/hr puts me at about 3000 rpms - not exactly the best spot, it's definately no slouch either.

I also posted the same topic at vwvortex.com twice and both times my threads were deleted with no responses - i am disappointed.

You should beat it pretty badly. A CLS6, even stock, pulls hard from a roll. Our biggest disadvantage is from a dig because of the heavy FWD setup we have. even with a chip the jetta will be much slower. I think chipped it might match up well with an auto stock CLS/TLS but even then would most likely lose.

Get some headers and an icebox on the DL and show up to race him...this will really make him feel small after all the :poop: talking!

47 or 57 i don't remember... But I know 3rd goes to 96~ish.

2nd and 3rd gear by far are the hardest pulling gears on the 6MT, the car turns into a rocket....
