Worth Buying a Low Mileage Auto 03 Type S
My 08 TSX was hit and run while it was parked, insurance is totaling it and only offering around $5,500 My friend's uncle is selling a super clean 2003 Acura CL Type-S auto transmission with 73K miles for $4,000. He purchased the car brand new at the time. The timing belt was recently replaced. I started doing some research on the vehicle and I see there is a ton of transmission issues that have plagued this model. This is worrying me, I don't know if I'm ready to take a gamble on the car even if its a pretty good deal. Would it be worth purchasing this vehicle? Was the auto transmission in the 03 model known to fail as well?
Thanks

If it were manual, i'd say go for it, but for an auto, i personally wouldn't

$4K seems as little high. But if you could talk him down to like $3500 I'd do it. Then do a 3X3 with new DW1 and you should be good to go...
My daughter's 2001 Type S has 160K with the original transmission with zero issues and runs like new...
But I've done ALL the PM on it to make sure it lasts...

How handy are you with vehicle repair/maintenance? if you are good perform an inspection of the important parts under the hood, warm it up, test drive the kick down and if it's in as good condition that he says it is take him up on the offer.
But if there are things off, then you have some power to negotiate.

I'd say go for it! Like WhiteTiger and others have said, if you find things that need (or will need) repairing/replacing you can hopefully knock that price down, but that's not a bad deal to me! I bought my AT 03 CL-S around the same mileage for about the same price and I've never once regretted my purchase (now sitting at around 120k miles). Definitely helps to be handy with cars too! Even being able to do the simple jobs will save you a hundred or two here and there.

Rollin the SRT8 or my CLS
I would also say go for it! I have an '03, and I bought mine in 2006, mine unfortunately failed at 85K! I had it replaced, been a gem since! However I don't drive my car a lot, and am only at 108K miles. It's not my daily driver. I love this car, and have all the time I've had it. To find one with that low of miles, and one owner, is rare. The transmission gamble is tough. Such a great car though!
