Why am I still hearing a clunk in the rear end?

When Brett (mclarenf...) and I did my Teins I found that I had a busted bracket that connects the end link to the knuckle. Replaced it today but I still have a clunk in my rear end.

It's happening over mild bumps and I can't figure it out.

The end links are tight and there is no play with rear sway bar.

Anybody have any ideas?

My car with Tein SS also has a clunk noise in the rear. Lots of Tein owners have been complaining. It's not just you.

My best guess is that it's the coils hitting each other when compressed.

Yeah but the problem is I had the same issue BEFORE the Teins were installed. I may try putting the old coil wraps I had from my Comptechs and see if it solves the problem.

Yeah, it's not just the Teins.

My car does it too. My dad looked at it and said it might be the sway bar bushings.

I'll replace them sometime this summer.

It may be bushings or that the clamp on the bushings is not tight enough. Also the Swaybar could be very close to the chasis cross member and may hit it when suspension responds to road surface. I had the same problem and it was a combination of both things.

i had a clunking sound up until a couple days ago. it turned out to be the end links of the sway bar. At first we couldnt figure it out and tried pushing the car down to bounce it and try to get the sound...when that didn't work we tried lifting it to bounce it and were able to find the problem.

Well the right end link is brand new and really tight. The left looks tight too. I may try getting new sway bar bushings and brackets from Comptech to see if it changes anything.

I have similar noises with the Teins as I had with the H&R's. It's annoying as hell.

grease the end links and the bushings on the sway bar... another member said this corrected the thumping sound over small bumps.

How do you grease end links? They're sealed. Gonna do the bushings tonight.

Just ordered a new set of bushings from Comptech. Joe S over there said they switched to eurothane a few years ago to help with that problem. I know I have the old bushings.

$5 each + shipping.

make sure you use the teflon tape Neil.. without it, it will squeek.

to answer your question about the endlinks... you take some grease or put some anti-seize compound on them after you clean them up... it prevents them from rusting and getting corroded

Not a camber issue.

My sway bars came with the red polyurethane bushings. There's still a clunk, so I don't think that'll fix the problem.

its not a squeak...its more of a "clunk" sound. I have it also, really havent pin pointed the problem yet, and everything seems tight still underneath.

I was having the same problem before. Just when i thought the Endlinks were tight, They're NOT! Took me a couple of days to figure it out. The Clunck only happends after i hit a bump when i turn. Im guessing its the Rebound of the springs causing the sways to move dramatically. You should Recheck your Endlinks screw (Allen Screw).

My suspension (TEIN SS) makes some odd “clunking” sounds every once and a while.
And I have an occasional squeak in the rear.
I just thought it was the way they were.
But now I think I may need new sway bushings or lubricate the old ones.

Is this something that’s fairly simple to do or is it like reinstalling your sways?
Can I do it with a set of jack stands or do the tires need to be supported when you unbolt the bushing?

For the record, I had my Comptech Sways installed at Park Avenue Acura back in 2002 and Jen’s relubricated them during my 15K service in 2003.

.

... you will not need to take the end links off... just unbolt the 2 bolts in each poly bushing and retape them...

Can the wheels “hang” when you do this or do you need to support them?

I'm gonna park my car at the end of my driveway with the ass hanging over. I think you'll need to jack the sway bar up to hold it in place as I believe it will drop when you loosen the bushings.

let them hang... jack the car up..and use your jackstands in the normal area you always put them... get your creeper and a breaker bar... i think it is something big 17mm 18mm 19mm.. not sure... take both bushings off.. pull the bar down.. cut off the old tape.. wipe them off good.. and put the plumbers tape/ thread tape on... you can put enough on so that it hangs over each end of the bushing when you put it back on...

if you still hear a noise.. oil them or grease them... but I never had a problem...

Hey Shawn, do a search. There was a post a while back about people putting the plastic sleeves between the lower coils on the SS to eliminate that noise. I can't seem to find it.

NSXNEXT, any luck on fixing this problem with the poly bushings? I have the same exact problem on my TSX with the Comptech rear sway. At first I was thinking somehow it was possible to put it in backwards. But after looking at pics I took, the bar is symmetrical, so I dont think thats the case...

And its the same symptoms as most others here. Going over a bump or dip when turning is the most noticable.

Yes the issue appears to be resolved. I'm thinking though that the problem was that the plastic clips that are on the inside of the sway bar brackets were loose. I slid them over to the bracket and tightened them up.
