And who's going to buy a Phaeton????

Don't get me wrong, it's a nice car. The problem is that it looks like a bigger Passat. I don't see people going to their local VW dealership ready to lay down $70k+....for a Volkswagen! Those same people are going to get the A8 instead. It would be like Honda making a $40k+ luxury sedan (sold as a Honda) to compete with the RL. Doesn't make sense.

Although I have not driven one I have seen the factory in Dresden where the car is made as well as sitting in the car .It's helluva nice car regardless of what label is stuck on the trunk .The car is beyond my means as a mechanic so it is moot point but assuming I had the money I would seriously look at the car .After all Acura is othing more than a brand name stuck on Hondas and people buy those as well .In the end it is what the car does that is important and how well it does it for the person buying it .If you buy cars based on brand label alone I am not so sure you are getting what you really need and want as opposed to what popular opinion is .

I think VW will get respect very soon. No one complains about the 40k toreag. Why? Cuz its a bad ass machine.

They have the know-how to make a great label, i bet they will! Give it couple of years when they make all their cars higher end.

Beautiful car but hell, why not get an A8 instead? It can't cost more. It is exactly the same car.

And yes, I do care about the badge on the trunk when the price gets in the noise bleed section.

I saw one in the parking lot recently. I am not bowing down to that car. Your 911, yes, but not a Phaeton.

It's totally boring looking from the outside. I got excited because it was the first time I saw it, and my friend asked why I was getting excited over a Passat. It seriously fooled him.

I'd take an A8, XJ8, S500/600, LS over that car any day. Heck, I'd even take a 7 series over that car.

Not that I can afford any of them though

I was at the SF Auto Show last week looking at the Phaeton and I'm impressed with the car for the $$'s. As I was looking at it, the guy next to me was expressing how much he liked the car also. He said that for the money, he wished that he had seen this car before he bought his current car. When I asked what he was currently driving, he said a MB S500. From his perspective, he liked the interior, the styling, and the German workmanship shined in this car. He said that he would take the Phaeton and bank the extra $40K next time.

Although only one person's view, it's a glimpse of someone that may buy the Phaeton.

At $70K i don't see it happening, that's status symbol land and a VW no matter how good won't cut it for most.
