Who Would Win?
My friends and I got to talking, and were wondering who would win in a race.
Friend #1: 2004 Hyundai Tiburon V6 5 spd / 170hp / 181 ft-lbs / 3015 lbs Friend #2: 2003 VW GTI 4cyl 1.8T 5 spd / 180hp / 173 ft-lbs / 3834 lbs Me: 97 CL 3.0 V6 AUTO / 200hp / 195ft-lbs / 3219lbs (I got the specs off of Edmunds so im sure thats to the flywheel not wheels...but anyway.) All of us have CAI and Exhaust....theirs are both 5spds, Mines an Auto, but I have headers also. Soo who would win?? |
I'm thinkin' 1, 3, then 2. Blind guessing of course.
|
I know the GTi does not weigh in at 3800lbs....it's prob 2800, must have been a typo, and the tiburon, dont they have 200hp?
Anyways....from my experience...you can win if they cant launch their cars perfect. Power brake it to 2000 rpms and you should out launch them good and get a nice jump. From there, they shouldnt gain on you, except possibly the gti in 3rd..... I've beaten em both, but I couldnt tell you what mods I had at the time and whether it was before or after my car was tuned. I do know the Tiburon was a nice run. |
I say in the number order of 1,2,3...Like Cocoa said I think the V6 Tiburon has 200hp and unless the GTI swapped out or chipped his turbo it aint that quick and your 3.0 is just too heavy to launch with them.
|
I had a little fun with a Tiburon yesterday. My co-worker has one but an automatic V6 and I rolled up on him on the highway at 60 and told him to punch it. I dropped it into 3rd and remained even till 90 where he gave up. I am assuming if the 3.0 trans doesnt blow up in the process, you may have a chance.
|
Did that run ever happen? I'm curious as to what the results were...

im pretty sure the tiburon has 170 hp. the 6 speeds are pretty quick.. never raced one from a stop but i have from a roll.. one at 40, killed him, and one at 80, also killed him. one had an intake and im not sure bout the other and i think the 80 one was an auto.

2.7L V6 in the Tiburon.
And the GTI is DEFINITELY not 2800 pounds. That sucker is heavy. I don't know where you're getting your information, but it's not correct. Also, I highly doubt the stall can go up to 2000 RPM in the 1G CL. |
I think you all should race instead of standing around with your thumbs up your asses talking about it.
You can't just say okay car A has 200 hp and weighs 3,000lbs vs car B with 170 hp and weighs 2,800lbs. How about gear ratios, torque curve, DRIVER, etc? All of those play a much bigger role in who will win other than power/weight raio. Magazine racers  |
:werd: mrsteve is the man :woot:
|
I'm with Steve, I love how everyone comes on here trying to compare numbers and past tests to see who will win, as if your scared that you will race them and lose, don't ask us who will win, instead go race them and post here to tell us who won.. although if you have headers you prob have an edge. Just race and be done, and then let us know how it turns out.

Also, I highly doubt the stall can go up to 2000 RPM in the 1G CL. Your right, it weighs 2928 lbs. "pg.21 on AutoWeek Oct. 18, 2004" Although that's for the 06' model. I highly doubt they'd be a 1000 lb difference in the car within the 3 years range from one another. But then again, who knows. And we are talking about the Golf gti correct? B/c when I hear GTI, I think of the golf, not the jetta (if it exists). |
|
I guess the 2003 model did weigh in at 2932 lbs....

my bads for the rough estimates...next time I'll be sure to get the exact numbers for everyone....

Someone on our forums confirmed that our manual states the stall convertor can go up to 2500 rpms, not that I would recommend it though with our POS trannies.

https://acurazine.com/forums/showthr...tall+convertor thats why u need the ipt torque converter, 3500stall thatd be nice... only 300 more rpm then your in vtec. but youd def need a tranny cooler. |
The CL would eat both...now prove them wrong for underestimating the 3.0's. :shakehead

Acura3.0CL, did you race them yet!??!?!?!?!?!?!
|
Why do people start such threads and never provide an update?
:shakehead Apparently the race did not take place. |
