Where should I buy a helmet for the track?

I'm gonna be well into the 13s quite soon so I need to purchase a helmet for the track. Where should I get one? Summit Racing? JEGS?

These things are expensive!!

ps: Mods if you wanna move this go ahead... I didn't know where it belonged

Mail ordering helmets is kinda tough unless you already know what size you take in a particular brand/model.

It's best to try one on at a local place, and then you can shop for price on the 'net if you want.

Like Almoter said, make sure the helmet is correctly certified. Some tracks don't allow motorcycle certified helmets.

You probably can ask the guys at the local track where they got their helmets to find a local retailer.

If you can, you should wait. Every 5 years Snell releases new specs for helmets. 2000 was the last time Snell released specs and they should be releasing the new specs for 2005 sometime this month. Many tracks will only allow the current spec and the previous 2 specs. So you'd get an extra 5 years use out of a SA2005 helmet.

I was on a site the other day that had a bunch of reasonably priced Bell made helmets that were Snell 2000 certitfied and were around $300 or so. Can't remember the site off the top of my head, but if I find it, I'll post it up!

Most any motorcycle dealer will also sell helmets. It's an advantage to be able to try them on til you find the right fit - the wrong fit can be worse than no helmet at all. Make sure, as was said before, that it has the current Snell sticker. You might try Heyser Cycle in Laurel on Rt 1. Or try www.ogracing.com. They're in Manassas, but service the SCCA crowd all over the east coast.

eBay.

I sold a barely used Bieffe on ebay for HALF what it cost... and it seemed to be going price at the time.

Helmets are one of those items that certainly depreciate. So try eBay... im sure you can get a similar deal.

If not... Bieffe or Arai == teh yum.
