Wheel/Tire Shopping--Help a naive shopper

Hey Guys:

I'm looking at SSR GT1's and Pirelli P Zeros for my CLS. I configured all this stuff at Tirerack.com. 18x8 rims and 225/45-18 tires. I don't know what all this "offset" stuff you guys talk about means...all I want to know is if I get these babies delivered, will they bolt right on my bone stock CLS without any issues? Will my speedometer be all messed up due to the change in tire circumference? Ever since I saw Nashua_Night_Hawk's SWEET tire/rim setup yesterday at his house, I'm hell bent on hooking myself up!!!

By the way, Nashua....thanks again for the tire...now I have a winter set!!!

All this stuff checked out for the CLS on the site, I'm just wondering if I need to do anything to the car beforehand in order for this stuff to fit. I'm also worried about speedo. calibration due to the 18" rims.

The wheels specs that will fit your car properly are:
bolt pattern(PCD): 5x114.3 aka 5x4.5

and for an 18x8 wheel, the offset should be in the +49 range
I don't know what the offset is on this size wheel tho.

However, the GT1 in 18x7.5 comes with an offset of +45
which should work just fine.
offset is basically, how far the wheel will stick out from the center of the car. Lower offsets makes wheels stick out futher. Higher ones, which are closer to the stock +55 will not stick out as far.

Those tires you are getting though will proabably rub if you were lowered, but if you are on the stock suspension, you will be fine. And they are a good match for the stock size. Also consider 225/40/18 as well as this is a more common size and usually cheaper.

here is a site alot of us use to figure out how off the circumference will be:
http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

Oh and one more thing about tirerack, don't tell them you have a CLS, they will give you a hard time about the new wheels/tires size if you do.

Any time you replace tires and/or wheels, there's a chance your speedo and odo will be off. I suggest borrow somebodys GPS system (or head out to the interstate) and do a time/mileage check.. YMMV (especially if the tires are a different size)..

235/40/18 is more closer to the stock tire's diameter then 225/40 or 225/45...

235/40/18 would just fit fine on SSR GTR 1 18x7.5, +45.

Tirerack says the 40's can't handle the load of the CLS...what a load of s**t!!! What's the difference between the 40 and the 45? is it height? I'm a tire moron!!!!

From tirerack, both 225/45/18 and 235/40/18 have the same exact Load rating 91Y SL

tmk70, I would call and a get the 235/40/18. The 225/45 has rev/mile of 804 compared to 820 for 235/40.

The stock has 819 rev/mile!!!

I have the 18x8 SSR GT1's with 225/45s, lowered with Comptech springs. No problems at all - no rubbing, no uneven wear so far (16k miles on the SSRs with Michelin Pilot Sports). I ordered mine from Tire Rack - overall was pretty satisfied with their service, etc.
