Wheel Refinishing / Curb Rash Solutions
I got a great deal on my 01 Navi CL-S last September, for a couple of reasons. First, cause it's PDG and second, cause all the rims were curb-rashed. I'd invest in aftermarket wheels but I really like the way the stockers look on our car, plus I just bought 4 new Sumitomo HTR+ tires.
I was talking to a tire shop owner about it and he said that this place that does custom wheel refinishing will fix it like brand new... they'll shave off the metal on top, paint & powder it and then coat it again (I'm paraphrasing ignorantly). Basically, restore it to perfect original quality in a day or two, for about $65/rim.
Not only does under $300 for what is basically a set of new stockers sound like a great price, I think the little bit of shaved metal will also prevent future curb rash (although I'm pretty decent at parking). However, I'm not aware of the down sides of/alternatives to this method, etc.
What kind of solutions for curb rash have you guys come across? I ran a search and read through all the stuff that showed up and it wasn't really helpful, closest thing to a solution I got to was a demel tool which I don't think would help in this case.

I think the '01 wheels are a machined finish. I used to just file down the rough spots and smooth and polish the area on a set of Manrays I had. Works pretty well but they won't look like new.

Get the TLS rims instead. Look very similar but do not get curb rash cause they don't stick out as much as the CLS rims.
Here's a pic of mine, not a scratch. I've had 2 sets on 2 different CLS.

werd, width does matter...
so far after 6k miles of driving on my chrome stockers, not a single scrape or scrath *knock on wood*...hopefully I'll keep it that way
Btw, I never knew the TL-S wheels were diff. from the CL-S wheels?

1) I'm looking for a cost effective way to get my rims lookin new again, so if you know anyone selling 4 new(ish) TL-S rims for under $400, do let me know =)
2) I personally have never curb rashed these rims in the 9k miles I've driven the car, and I really don't see that being a problem for me, so CL-S/TL-S rims don't matter to me.

what i did was, sand down the damaged areas, and then put a layer or two of clear coat and there 95% new again

Considering your location, boy, are you in luck. Powder Coating AND rim repair in one spot in Pittsburg, CA. Might be a little more than you want to spend, $125 a wheel for PC chrome, and $150 for black pearl chrome. See my post "i've had better Mondays....$4,000 of body damage" if you want to see the black chrome on a CLS6 in anthricite.
If you're at where I think you are at, you can afford to drive the rims to Gary Goodrich and avoid those costly shipping charges. He usually turns around four wheels in three days, including repair.
My car goes in for repair tomorrow. By the way, I AM a powder coating guy, but I don't have the equipment for the goodrich process. One thing we test in powder coated paints is called impact resistance. This involves dropping bullet shaped weights from different heights and noting when the paint chips.
40 inch-pounds of impact resistance is considered poor, 160 inch pounds is considered to be good enough for anybody for any application. The highest I have ever seen is 850 inch-pounds of I. R.
But slamming a 3,700 pound mercury cougar into my wheel, now that is what I call a test!
Her green body paint is on my powder coated wheel, and all of my powder coating is still on my powder coated wheel. I consider the cost worth it.
www.goodrichtechnology.com Tell them Dave from ITW referred you. Negotiate for price. $100 each isn't impossible.
