what's up everyone...noob here :)

Hi everyone...I currently own a 2000 Toyota Celica GT but am in the process of selling it. My first choice as a replacement at this point is the 2001 or 02 CL Type S. Just from briefly reading about the problems with the tranny on this car I am starting to wonder whether it is worth it. Obviously you guys are all probably a lil bias about this car but what do you think...is it something I should stay away from? and what are some other major problems that have occured. Nice site by the way

Well, first thing I'll do is move this to the right forum

You have absolutely nothing to worry about regarding the tranny. There is definitely a problem, but it doesn't affect every car. 96% of the CL's/TL's out there are unaffected. Just be sure when you buy the car you get the 7yr/100k powertrain warranty so if anything does happen... you're covered.

Good luck and welcome aboard!!

Owners with tranny problems are in the miniroity. I have 55k miles on my 01 CLS and it has never missed a beat. Engine and driveline are exceptionally smooth.

many many many many people have had tranny failures...quite a few have had MULTIPLE failures, while still, some have had no trouble at all.

some people have been so disgusted by the tranny issue that they have sold the car, others have devoted their allegiance to Acura and WILL NOT part with the CL-S.

bottom line, the CL-S is a sweet ride, alot of fun, etc....BUT....

the tranny thing is a HUUUUUUUGE crap shoot.

good luck

take comfort in that ANY CL-S auto tranny is warrantied for 100k miles, so that takes SOME concern away.

I hear ya... I went from a 1998 CL to the TL-S and it took me a while to get used to that size difference. I'm sure a Celica to a TL would take even longer.....

Some members have had more luck by just avoiding D5 at highway speeds - it sucks to have to do that, your gas mileage will be a bit lower, but it might help.

Other than the tranny issue (which sucks, but is covered 100K miles and may be avoidable with no D5), it's an awesome machine - go for it!

lol ah that doesnt look too bad...nothing a three step Meguires wax and shine wouldnt take care of

I would look at buying outside my area but the cost to bring one into Canada from the US would be crazy (taxes, duty, etc etc)

*little bit of a noob question here but what is D5? do you mean avoiding 5th gear in the manual mode of the auto transmission?

D5

I think this whole D5 theory has not been proven, I wouldn't worry to much about it... like others have said, some people have bad luck, and it breaks, even more than once, and other never have any problems. The important thing is that the dealer warrentys it, so its all good.

If you go out and drive it and are totally satisfied with the way it drives as well as the way the car looks and how you fit into it. DO NOT let the tranny situation, and that alone sway you from getting a fantastic car.

37k miles and happy as a clam with my 01 CL-S.

Of course now by saying that I have doomed myself to at least 2 tranny swaps in under 4 months

Anyway....like they said. Its a great car, I fell in love with the interior. Strong engine. Only gripe for me was the handling, and that is easily recitified.

Welcome aboard!

If you love the CLS that much, you really deserve to check out the 03 6 speed manual shift and be worry free and have even more fun. There are plenty of used 03s out there already, I know I got one. Maybe a little more money but in the long run, I think worth the price. At least drive both the 01-02 automatics and the 03 6 speed.

the 03 CLS is a little out of my financial range at this point...if I was looking at getting new or near new I think I would have to look at the Accord V6 Coupe (financially speaking)

I can't speak for reliability yet, but I just bought an 01 CL-S and it is incredible. I absolutely love this car. My only regret is that I can't beat my friends 01 mustang bullit gt....yet. but anyway i would recommend this car over a newer accord or just about anything. go for it man.

and let me ask you guys, if the tranny blows up on me whats the worst that happens? if its under warranty then acura fixes it for free and I get to drive around in a loaner for a few days right?
