What's reasonable mileage for a new car?

After all the swaying back and forth over buying my colleague's Boxster S vs. a new FX35 for the past couple of weeks, I didn't buy either of them. Instead, I picked up a brand new (???) 2004 G35 coupe in diamond graphite w/ NAV, full aero package, and premium package for about $1400 under MSRP. I'll be taking delivery of it tomorrow evening.

The one I purchased was the only one in the Bay Area configured the way I wanted. When I went to look at it, another guy was standing around the car waiting for a salesman to help him out, and he looked ready to buy it. I ran inside the dealership and found a saleslady who helped me out immediately, and I got to test drive it first. After the test drive I decided that I wanted to negotiate on the car so the other guy didn't get the chance to even look at it. :P It's crazy how people are lining up for a 6MT around here, from what I have read in various forums and from salespeople.

Anyhow, it never occurred to me until now that the car has about 52 miles on it (including the 6 or so that I added myself) at the time of sale. I know it's after the fact already, but should I be worried about the "high" mileage on this vehicle i.e. the 46 miles that were on this car prior to my test drive? I surely didn't beat on it, but who knows about others???

What do you think is reasonable mileage at the time of delivery for a brand new car?

My cl had 9 miles on it when i drove it outta the showroom. 52 isn't that bad. It was probably some people just like you who acted interested, drove it a little and didn't buy it. It should be fine, but if you notice anything take it in right away and im sure the warranty will cover it.

I had 10miles on my car, and I beat the shit outta the car I test drove. I hope no one else did that to the car your getting.

I am sure it is all warranty items if anything goes.

Congrats on the new car and I hope it brings much happiness.

Most people buying an RL don't exactly "get on" the throtle too often. People buying/looking at a G35, might.

THink of it this way, McLarenF1's used to cost 1 million dollars brand new, and came with 200-300 miles on the odometer. In that time, test drivers drove the living shit out of each of those cars to make sure they preformed to spec. To get work done after buying one, you have to ship it back to england.

How bad could the car have been treated in 46 miles??

All cars have at least 6-10 usually just from being moved around while being transported.

Thanks for your reassurances.

I guess I'm just getting nervous, and during the times that I'm not immersed in work, I'm thinking paranoid stuff.

At least I'll have 4 years/60,000 miles to figure it out. *knock on wood*

46 miles when fully broken in -- drive it hard, it doesn't matter.

46 miles when new and not broken in -- better be careful, and don't rag on it.

My car had 3 miles on it when I got her, and I checked like 5 other TL's on the lot to make sure that they all had the same or similar mileage. Fresh delivery, never been test driven except at the factory.

Honestly, though, if the engine is not making any weird noises, piston slap, knock, then it'll be fine. Especially because the VQ35DE is a pretty strong engine.

I had 108 on my car when I bought it. It was the last CL on the lot and had been sitting around for quite some time. My car is running fine.

So 46 miles is no biggie.

Congratulations on the new car! As everyone else has already said, don't worry about the 46 miles. Just enjoy it.

Thanks, cl-driver! Good thing you got the vehicle report on the used G35C for me last week. It had a lien registered against it, so I didn't even want to touch it.

Call me paranoid, but I'm new to the US from Canada and still learning the ins and outs.

I hope so. I did quite a bit of research and I was even thinking to myself when I went in that $1000 off MSRP would be a long shot. I'm quite satisfied, though considering the demand. It may have also helped that orders for 2005 models are neing placed late June.

The negotiated discount was actually $1130. Then I realized that discount was based on the old MSRP pre 14-MAY-2004 $250 price increase on all G35Cs. So unknowingly, I also got a $250 break.

The dealership did tell me that they would give me bigger discounts on less-equipped G35C models, though.

I had about 6 miles on my CL. I'd say anything over 50mi would make me think twice.

Probably went on a few other test drives before you but i still wouldn't worry.

Congrats on the new car and best of luck with it.

My neighbor's TL had 1200 miles on it when he got it "New". It was from one of the ladys in accounting driving it around. They took off $500 or so for the miles. That was in 2002, they still have the car and it still looks new. Now it has 20K on it. I won't worry about it.

It's possible the dealership did a vehicle swap at some point with another dealership - car was driven from dealership A to dealership B.

52 miles is nothing in the long run

but i hope you understand that the car was probably ragged out for the majority of those miles

you see this is what pisses me off

anytime a car has been driven by a rep from the dealership as a loaner car for anything over 1 week the car should be considered used

i hate going into dealership where they advertise brand new SHOW car driven only by manager 6000 miles on the odo and its only discounting it a few hundred dollars

WHEN YOU NO LONGER HAVE TO BREAK-IN THE CAR IT IS NOT NEW ANYMORE AND SHOULD BE CONSIDERED A USED CAR!!!!!

Taking delivery of a "new" car with 10+ miles is usually not a big deal. However, keep in mind that those extra miles may be the hardest miles the car will ever see in it's life. Take me and my friend for example. The dealer let us take out a G35C 6MT for 2 hours. We did everything a couple of 22 year olds would have wanted to do with the car: burnouts, highspeed chases dropping the clutch at ridiculous rpms, and drifting, just to name a few things. When it was time to return the car, we stopped at a gas station just to make sure the burnt tire smell was gone before we gave the car back

My old 01 CLS only had 3 miles on it and came off the trailer with the interior still completely wrapped in plastic.

However, when I bought my 03 CLS 6MT, it had over 350 miles on it. I wasn't too pleased, but was glad to get it anyway.

Count yourself lucky you found one with only 52 miles on it given the fact that it's a discontinued car.

Demo cars should have a much larger discount. 1,200 miles on a new car is crazy. My CL had 8 miles.

If the 2 dealerships are 30-40 miles from each other then they'll drive the cars to make the trade. They dont pay truckers to ship a car that distance.

My car had 7 miles on it when I got it new. 46 miles isn't a big deal - probably a few lookers came by for a test drive before you got the car. And you got the exact car you were looking for so as long as you baby and take care of the car from now on there should be no problems.
