Im going to say the stang. The LX model in 88 is a 5.0. So off the line maybe he'll get you but top end you'll probably take him after the 1/4 mile. But maybe a stock 88 is probably a cow by now depending in what condition its in.

I ran a 5.0 LX that belonged to a friend. I got him by a few car lengths although he jumped about a half a car off the line. I was in my modded TL-P. I ran him again a few days ago with the Trans Am. It was a joke. I gave him a head start and blew his doors off. Dont sleep on modded ones though. They can chew up and spit out some of the fastest cars out.

OMG, you will murder him. they have like 205 horsepower and absoutly suck after 2nd gear. i kill 98 gts with headers and exhaust from anywhere except off the line. even off the line i am passin them at 30. and that was with intake on my automatic. if he has anything short of head work you will show him your tail.

Heavily modded 5.0's are insanely fast. I've seen one spinning tires from a 50-mph roll start, and I'm talking SPINNING the tires. It was sick. My buddy driving his '01 WS6, lightly modded, was laughing at how shitty it looked, then shut up really quick as soon as he saw the monster doing a burn-out while going 50 mph. Hahaha!!
But... in stock or near stock form, the 5.0 is nothing to fear. I even staged against a moderately modded 5.0 Cobra and I only lost by one-tenth with a shitty launch. On the street from a roll, I would've taken him out.
Good luck and have fun. Let us know whoat it goes.

Yeah, except the 4.6 really sucks. The 5.0 is a mod monster -- it responds really well to mods and has a huge potential, whereas the 4.6 just sounds nice.

I could swear the LX's were the 4 cylinders, maybe even the 4cyl turbo's. because I remember hearing from a friend who likes stangs that people usually get LX bodys and swap 5.0's into them because the LX's are lighter than the actual 5.0 models.

What were you thinking, a 5.0L 4 or 6 cylinder??

That would be the biggest 6 cyl. in the world, wouldn't it? The highest displacement on a 6 cyl I've heard of it something like 4.5L.
In any case, as a general assumption, any high displacement domestic engine will respond pretty well to mods, especially FI ones.

a friend of mine used to have one of those.

I used to have a 97 Mustang GT with the 4.6 and it really was nothing special after second gear. If it is a 5.0, it will probably be a really good race. Let us know who wins.

TQ > MPG
I have a 94 GT 5.0, that with only gears/exhaust/ and drag radials runs 14.0 just about every time down. If he is absolutely bone stock you may win, but not by much. Also is it a 5 speed or auto, it makes a huge difference.
5 speed = 14.5-14.7 @ 95mph
Auto = 14.9 - 15.2 @ 92mph, dependant on condition of tranny
I dont think there are any BONE STOCK Fox body 5.0's out there anymore, so odds are he has some mods and if you say it is tuned well you will probably lose. If he doesnt spin like crazy and doesnt miss his shifts he'll get a decent jump, probably 1-2 car lengths, and pull away slowly.
And 96-98 GT's are dogs, even modded. I beat a 5 speed in my gf's bone stock 03 Maxima auto 14.9 to his 15.1. Plus they dont respond to mods like the 302's do.

On topic - is the 88 5.0 fuel injected? I know in the mid 80's GM was selling the 305 in both FI and carburated versions.

Honestly with the mustang it all depends if it's a 5-speed or AOD. If it's AOD and not that modded, it would be close (AOD 5.0's are really slow unless a lot is done to the tranny). Remember, a stock 5L mustang AOD would run a high 14 or low 15 at the track on a good day. Convertible AOD's would run 15.6-15.8! BUT if it's a 5spd then watch out! I use to own 2 mustangs and did everything you can think of to them. My friend's 91 coupe with only a k&n filter catback exhaust would do 14.1 @ 99 all day long!
