A cop can operate radar on any one of those bands. Of course there are a lot more "bands" out there but your radar detector is designed to only alert on the bands that police radar operate on.

Here's the kicker: other devices (garage door openers, bank alarms, automatic doors, etc) operate on some of the same bands as police radar (or at least they bleed into that area). How do you tell the difference? With our units you really can't. We can't afford the units that can absolutely discern the true source of the signal. Only experience and a good radar detector can help you discriminate.

X band is hardly used anymore. You might find them still in use by some of the more poorer police departments in rural areas. Tons of warning on police X band. As mentioned previously other items on X band is the cause for most falses. K band is getting more rare, but is still used. K band was the original "instant on" frequency. K band once fired is easy to pick up. Ka band is by far and away the most prevalent. It is used moving, stationary, instant on, and unfortunately it is cheap so all but the poorest police departments have it. In instant on mode there is only one defense. You have to hope the cop fires at someone else and you get their echo. Otherwise any detector will only let you know that you are caught. Luckily laser is still expensive and last I read there are only 500 units in the entire U.S. Unfortunately, laser is getting cheaper and is like Ka in that when its used against you there is no defense. Your only hope is that you pick up on someone else's echo. Finally, laser is effected by weather and environment. Rain will shut laser down as the light echoes off the rain drops. Things like fog and dust disperses the light and also makes laser useless.
