what would u buy if........

you had $40k to spend on the car ?

i'm thinking between:

2001 bmw 330ci
1997-1998 bmw 540i
2001-2002 lexus is 300 (lacks horsepower)
1998-1999 lexus gs300/400
1997-1999 bmw m3 (hard to find in good condition)
2001 3.2 acura type s

which is the best buy for it's money and speed and insurence considering i'm 19 and looking to pay $400 CAD (approx. $270 USD) a month...

thanks for the advice..

Eh?

If that's US $40K... then get a 2003 CL-S 6spd and either turbocharge or supercharge it... and use the remaining $4K on a college education

Then buy a 2003 CL-S 6spd without Navi... you can probably get it for less than $31K out the door.

You would spend 1/4 of that if you got the Junkyard Wars team on it.

A brand new CL-S can be had for 28 or so, non nav. Go for it, it's a steal and better than used.

Acura 3.2CL Type S with no navigation system
Infiniti G35 sedan with cloth and no sunroof, so the base model
Honda Accord EX V6 coupe
Nissan 350Z Touring model

But I don't know the prices and other info about these cars in Canada, so I can only tell that they cost under $30k in the U.S.(I think). Don't spend U.S.$27k on a used car when you can buy a new one.

'Round here... a 2001 S4 w/ "low miles" (ie. 40k) runs $35k. No freaking way. Not when you can get a CL S 6spd for $27k out the door.

If you're 19 and insurance is an issue... 4 doors is going to be more expensive. New car is more expensive. Sport car is more expensive. Luxury car is more expensive. From the cars you put in your original list, I'd guess the IS300 and the 540 are going to be best bets for insurance.

You can get a well-equipped IS300 w/ 5 gears for sitcker of just under $33... essentially the same as the CL. Can probably get it for ~$29k and still have plenty left over for mods.

Finally, and I don't mean to be critical, but $270 a month won't get you into a $40k car. That might pay for your insurance in a new sports car. Even if you were to lease which is the cheapest in terms of payments, a 39 mo lease on a $27k car is going to land you around $350/month w/ ~ $3k down (which they'll want unless you get a co-sign). Hope everything works out for ya.

Agree w/ the recommendations above, but not in the original context of the post. Remember he's looking for car under $40k, $270/mo payment, for new driver. The Cobra, M3, 350 and other recommendations might be more fun but unrealistic. Honestly, I'd be happy w/ any of the cars mentioned even now, let alone for a first car. I agree w/ AllMotor, the extra money put into education will be worth a lot more in the long run.

Sorry man, last post read wrong... wasn't implying you weren't paying for the car or you were leaching off anyone in any way. I was just saying some of the recommendations seemed a bit off from what you put as the initial bounds. I did read your original post as this was your first car. My bad, sorry.

I'd still take any car off your list no problem Love those 540s.

Out of curiousity, are cars like the WRX and the SRT "Neon" or whatever it is off the list? They're right up there w/ the CL for bang/$$$. Not quite same class of car though, but the WRX is well respected in some regards.

Personally, we went for the brand-spanking new CL over the following list (please keep in mind this was intended to be wife's car--before my ride got totalled a few weeks after we bought hers):
2002 Volvo C70
2001 Audi S4
2000 BMW 328Ci
2002 BMW 330Ci
2003 VW Passat W8
2003 Lexus IS300
2003 M-B C240
2003 Infinity G35 (sedan - coupe not out)
2003 Accord V6

...Z350 wasn't out yet, but she didn't want a 2-seater anyway.

The only car that came close for us was the S4. Again, they're just way too much for the amount of abuse you KNOW they've been through after 40k miles--and considering the CL is just as reliable as the Accord it doesn't make sense. Only thing I would change now is I would wait around for a 6 spd Anthracite instead of "settling" for the silver.

it's all good bro

ya i'm down to 5 cars now:

2001 lexus IS300 (still a toyota)
1997-1998 BMW M3 (hard to find in good condition)
1998-1999 BMW 540i (big boat)
2001-2003 3.2 CL Type S (tranny problems)
2001 BMW 330ci (rsx type s will win )

but i think it'll be between bmw 330ci and type s .....

I also wanted mersedes badly, but they all auto and slow unless it's a $50,000+ AMG :o
