What mod to give better cornering?

Hello,

What should I change to get better cornering? Would just the sway-bars do this? I don't want to lower the car, or change the feel of the ride. I just want to go around corners faster without the body swaying.

Thanks!

Yeah, I believe that the sways would do it! THe springs would help, but if you don't want to lower it.

My friend has a sway bar and strut bars on his car. His car is dropped a little. Man his car can take a corner. I think that will help you take corners better.

I think sways would be a good choice as well. I just had Comptech springs and sways installed today and body roll is completely GONE!! I personally don't like lowering a car too much either, but the drop with Comptech springs is 1.25in in the front and 1.0in in the rear. I think it looks great!! The drop is very modest. The ride is great so far.... no penalty at all! Check out this thread for pics:

I read here that the lower springs make the tires wear out faster?? Would there be any problems with potholes and bottoming out?

I like the feel, I just want to flatten it out a bit on the corners (I liked that about my integra).

Would just the comtec sway bars make a noticable difference? Or do you really need to to both sway and springs?

Also, can the sway bars be done yourself, or do you have to go to the overpriced dealers? Is an alignment needed after just sways?

Thanks again!

Athena_CL_TypeS; I just received my Comptech sway bars yesterday and they will be installed at the 15,000 mile service in about two weeks. The rear bar looks to be a easy install just by driving the car on to a couple of 4x8's and using a creeper. The front looks like you would need access to a rack or at least a couple of jack stands. No alignment should be needed when installing sway bars only. At one time I did all of my own maintenance and installs, but now I find it much easier to pay someone to do it. My local dealer will install both for $134.00. From my previous experience with cars that had sway bars only installed, I think that this is the way to go with this car. I chose the CL-S over the Audi TT and do not want to alter the ride too much from stock. Too bad the TT was German and not Japanese, it was one of the sweetest cars I have ever driven!

You'll actually have some grip with new tires

But seriously, the stock tires do get trashed a little too much. They're actually a really good compromise. Their grip is decent, they last fairly long, traction is not bad in both wet & dry. But they are just not a performance tire so when you do get a performance tire you will notice a big increase in overall grip during spirited driving.

Well put, GoldType S

Those who want stickier tires might consider the following...

1) Replacing the original tires look like they'll cost about 200 pesos each, out the door.

2) Stickier ones may well be more or a bit less but I doubt they'll be half as much.

3) Lexus, for the IS300, puts the 17" wheels and sticky tires on...with a BIG caveat about tire wear...as in... "expect them to last about 15,000 miles"...OUCH. That's why you can get the 16s and better wearing tires (and less sticky, of course) as a no cost option.

I suspect the BVW 3-series with the 'sport' option has sticky/fast wearing shoes as well. The C&D article on their 3-series that had a tree run it off the road mentions replacing the orig tires...don't recall if they mentioned the mileage, however. Anybody got the article handy?

I'm pleased that Acura did not go the Lexus route on wheel/tire combos. I am curious how long the original tires will last, however. I've got almost 20,000 on my S . I need to scrounge up my tread depth gauge and see how it compares to a new tire...on 2nd thought I don't think I really want to know.

Sway bars...
The Svc manual gives detailed instructions on replacing both frt & rear bars. The rear appears to be a piece-of-cake. You might have to pull the big plastic splash shield for the front one, if I recall correctly. You might not even have to pull the wheels.

OK, I'll have the dealer do the sways.

How much should installation run?

And where is a good place to mail-order the comtek sways?

Dan, please post here when you get your sways installed. I may wait to read feedback from someone who has only modded the sways.

I know the stock tires aren't the best, but they have been great on dry/wet/snow conditions, at least for me.

Thanks everyone!!

Athena,

Try www.autocarparts.com . Tim's service is very good. He has the Comptech sways and springs for a pretty good price. I got my sways and springs from him.

Yup I second that. Tim's prices are $30 less for the springs and $30 less for the sways. Saves you $60 bucks over getting them directly from comptechusa.com.
The change is handling is amazing and this is still on the stock rubber. It IS firmer but not noisier but after a couple of weeks I honestly find the ride almost as soft as stock. My dealer charged me another $74 for the sways installation but I know I was lucky with my installation.

Good luck …
