What gear are you on?

You know how when you shift into SS, you get a little thingy that shows you which gear you're on? Is it possible to get that to show up even if you're not in SS mode? You guys think it would be cool to be able to do that?

One time, I was going about 80 in D5 and I looked at my revs and thought they seemed high so I pushed the shifter up thinking I was in D4 not D5 and the engine revved a little and I was like oops and I put it back in D5. No harm done, but I felt dumb. Since then I've always looked to check what gear I'm in.

Probably pretty tough to alter, seems like you'd have to dive into
the cluster electronics.

Too bad 'cause I think it would have been "nice". Overall I think
that the cluster display is pretty good but I also have wished that
Acura had done the gear selection part differently. The decision
to leave the "D5" selector light on + display the gear on the LED
as the way to differentiate between SS and Auto is pretty lame
in my opinion. If you're in D5 you can slide the shift selector to
SS to check your gear but you're out of luck if you're in D4 or D3.
I know, not that big a deal but why not display the miracle of an
Acura transmission hunting thru the gears?

While we're redesigning the cluster I want a VTEC engagement
light, an IMRC actuator "confirmation" light, and how about a
torque converter lock-up light?

That's probably exactly why they didn't do it.

well...D5 stands for 'Divine 5-speed automatic' and its the latest technology replacing that clunky 'left your leg, shove your elbow' manual manuever.

OH....I see.

After reading all those “dead tranny” posts, I just thought those lights were there to notify you to call the TOW TRUCK when they start flashing erratically.

I agree that it would be cool to have, but may be too hard to do. Any electronics whiz out there wanna take a shot at this?
And yeah, a vtec engagement thingy would be cool too. One led for the ECU signal, one led for the IMRC.

Shawn S:
You need a new car dude... That MT is sooo yesterday's technology!

The SS mode is not totally manual. If your rmp drop below a certain level for too long it downshifts. Same thing if you let them run too high without really giving it some gas. Also if u notice on an incline it will shift to third or if rpm too low it wont let you into 5th

that's right, it can shift or not shift on it's own (semi-automatic?). but he's talking about being in one gear and displaying another gear [on the indicator]. i have seen this before, too.

nah, it's not that tough. Let's think about it, the sensor for gear selection has to remain outside the actual trans housing, more than likely, it's tapped into the ecu. If we could find out which harness it's wired to, it can be mapped or crossed to come on at all times.

Logically thinking, the sensor is signaling what gear the trans is at all times, whether you're in sport shift mode or not. Only thing we're lacking is making the window light up.

It can't be that hard

momentum3.2:
You are probably right. It is probably the ECU that is signalling the gear selection. However, I disagree with the "it can't be that hard". Feel free to prove me a liar.

And in case you didn't figure that out, that was a challenge.

If you lived nearby, I would drive my Helm's over in a heartbeat. Anyone near your place you can borrow one from?

i will prefer a shift light instead of gear position light..as i never look at that little number when i am racing...i can feel what gear i am using but i can not feel exact rpm to shift..so what i need mabye just a simple shift red light..i know one of the members in this forum has it...he installs at the driver side a pillar i have his pic..but not sure if that is ok to post?
