What to buy for $7500-$8000?

I'm looking for another used car with a budget of about $8000 max. I want something that has a very nice interior and somewhat decent looking exterior, but want something somewhat fast stock. Also has to be reliable. I think its between a Buick Regal GS and Acura CL. Not sure what else to look for. Maybe a older lexus?

The Regal will do mid 14s, usaully are loaded with sunroof, heated/leather seats, and are very reliable and much cheaper (pick one up for $5-6k with around 50-60k miles).

A TL or Cl are definitely very good looking but the tranny problems might not be worth it, unless I can find a 03 CL-S with a 6 speed but its going to be expensive with higher miles. How good are the engines? High maintenance? But as a decently fast car for what they are and having a six speed, they will be more fun, but... and a big but is that a regal gs can me modded for way cheaper and become way faster with little work.

I understand your point, .........but it's still a BUICK! You could definitely pick up a CL-S for that, but the tranny problem is something to pay attention to. Acura did publish a list of all affected serial numbers at some point.. Are you looking for a daily driver or a primary car? If not, you could scrape a S2000, Miata, RX-7, and the list goes on......NO BUICK

Well one, I have a gtp but I hit a guard rail and smashed it up, but the buick's are comfortable, faster, more reliable, yes they do not look as good, but they make a nice sleeper. I'm not into s2000, miatas, rx-7's, integras. I'm into somewhat larger cars. This will be a dd and I do drive a lot. Do the cl's and tl's have full top/bottom heated seats or is it just the drivers which is full heated? Is the navigation even worth looking into getting if a cl/tl has it?

How comfortable are the seats and I hear there a little loud driving, that can probably be fixed with some damplifier pro since it will get a upgraded sound system.

The seats are some of the most comfortable ive sat it, but everyone likes different types of comfort...

I like a seat that will hug you all around, somewhat firm --- most everyone who has been in my car compliments on how nice the seats are...

For comparison, when i need a little more space i either drive an impala SS or a chevy tahoe... This morning i took my brother to JFK airport, about 2.5 hour ride round trip --- the seats in the impala were KILLING my back, no support, no bolstering --- look comfortable but sadly are not.

The CL driver seat has butt and back heaters, passenger has butt heater.

My Seats are a little squeeky, but thats something ive been meaning to fix. Overall my car is rattle free, although some people on the board have complained they arent so lucky. Insignificant road noise, at least to my ears.

Navigation does its job, but really nothing special about it.

I was gonna say get a GTP or a Monte Carlo SS --- cuz those cars can be fast if u throw some money into them.

I hear they are nightmares.

I've known two people with them, both of them have had endless problems.

Why do u need a fast car THE cl-s are more then fast enough.
Fast cars = Speeding tickets = High insurance rates = loss of licence
Fast cars = accidents
When I was a youngen I wanted a fast car also but after a few accedents and a few speeding tickets and a 5k insurance premium I can live with a slower car.
My next car is going to be a 05 RL which is a little slower.
Try finding a 04 tl for 8 K can be doone if u look hard enough,
If u change to CL-s tranny fluid every 30k and its the updated tranny u should be fine.
The engine is bulletproof I have 160K miles, and they are not pampered miles and car still flies!

I guess I wasn't aware of the problems with the LS. I just remember that it came with a V8 + handshaker option... Maybe an old Impala SS...LS1 V8 FTW!

hey where are you located? and also if you find a well taken care of CL, you won't have to worry about the tranny if you take care of it and I think the base version doesn't have the tranny problem...im completely fine. the CL-P (base version) has 225 HP but with only headers/CAI/and pulleys I get 260+HP...since you mention speed...

but again, where are you located? if you dont mind me asking

Actually the Impalla SS that you are refering to had a 260HP LT1, not LS1. I only assume your talking about the 1994 to 96, because of your price range. I'm pretty sure the CLS will take one.

After looking around a bit I think that Buick is not to bad looking. Seen a few in black with black wheels. Not to bad.

As far as the CLS tranny goes, I'm on my Second "Updated" tranny with only 6K miles and its having problems again. Does not matter if you get one taht has all ready been replaced, they are still shit! Many members are on thier 3rd and 4th trannies.

I'm located in cleveland. I'm not much of a street racer but wanted to go to the track every once in awhile, which I have done with my friends car, so thats pretty fun. If I can find a CL 6speed in great condition I'll look into buying it but I'll also be looking into a regal gs, whatever has a better deal. How is the performance mods for the Cl? After main bolt on's and tuning, what kind of power would you be pumping out of a type s?

the more popular option for power is the Comptech Supercharger which nets just under 280ish wheel HP at only 3 psi...(itd be 300wheel HP for the 6speed). you can get a High Boost Pulley [HBP] for 6 psi and about 20-30 extra wheel HP... this will run you $3000-5000 depending on new/used.

the CL-P has lower compression so is Way! better for forced induction...(and no tranny problems)

as you asked: CL-S auto with bolt on and tuning will probably see about 240ish max at wheels, CL-P 225ish max, and CL-S 6sp 250ish max. they are all very close when you get down to things like the 3550 curb weight and FWD.

I asked where you're from because I've been trying to sell my car, but was looking for just over $9000. I have 2001 white 3.2 Cl-P with brand new brakes all around (slotted rotors up front), headers, cold air intake, and pulleys which puts me at 205wheel HP (5-10 more than stock CL-S), 86000 miles (CL's are known to be able to do 200k+), etc, etc.

just PM me if you are interested. I was hoping you were in chicago, but at least you're in the midwest. lemme know whats up, maybe I can help you.

thanks!

For your price range I would suggest the TL year range 1999-2001, this is when it had the 4spd but no "Type-S" model.
The gearbox is solid and it can pretty much take a 2001 CL-S (I know this true because my buddy in a 99 3.2TL always beats me)
I love my CL-S but from your description of what you want, the TL is probably the best choice
