What is "wheel hop" and why does it happen?

On my '94 ES300 (188hp), when I brake-torqued the car, and let go at a launch, there would be some serious vibration up front until the car settled and accelerated smoothly. I've read posts from someone w/ a CL-S that had wheel hop recently at the track -- Webtoker? What causes this, and why does it happen?

Thanks in advance!

I think wheel hop occurs from the engine/tranny shock of you dumping the revs and the TC trying to handle all that sudden power.

Wheel hop usually occurs when the tires start spinning on unsmooth pavement. My Camaros used to wheel hop really bad on bad roads because the ass end was so light.

I ripped a paragraph, so if someone doesn't like the theory, I'll give them the link to the page, and they can hassle the writer:

"This is a simple (not necessarily interesting or technically correct) explanation of wheel hop:
The suspension and engine are connected to the rest of the car with flexible, rubber bushings and mounts. This flex kills vibrations, but it also produces a secondary, unwanted, oscillatory mechanical system. Normally, this system isn't acted on in such a way that it oscillates. When launching, the weight transfers to the rear of the car, reducing traction in the front. As the front tires break traction, the forces on the suspension and engine also change, setting them into motion. When the tires grab again, the forces change back the other way, now applied to a system already in motion. Now we have an oscillating force applied to an oscillating system, much like a hitting a paddleball. If you apply force to the paddle to match the natural frequency of the ball attached to the elastic string, you can keep that system going all day. With wheel hop, the motion of the system feeds back to the wheels, causing the oscillating force to sync up with it. This will also go on all day (until you reduce throttle or the transmission falls apart). "

Part II:

If you look at the part about the oscillating systems, consider something else too:

Mike has the lowering springs. They have increased his spring rate (and lowered the car), but he has not increased the "damping" by adding firmer shocks (AKA dampers).

When someone excites a control system with too little damping, it will go into a oscillation. When someone adds more damping the oscillation turns into a decreasing set of oscillations, and with "enough" damping, it goes away.

The motor mounts, springs, and anything flexing in the system will all help to exacerbate this motion.

Stronger shocks, stiffer mounts and bushings, and other devices can help...

(yeah, just another opinion...)

Let me guess. You are fairly young and have never owned an american, real wheel drive, V8 automobile.

Wheel hop is any camero's, mustang's or firebird's middle name!

I used to drive my sister's Mustang fastback, and that think would hop like crazy on some surfaces -- gotta love those leaf springs and solid rear axles (with too much power)!

I owned 2 Mustangs: a '65 convertible(IT was 18 years old at the time) and an '84 GT.

They both had the same 302 engine and bounced around like crazy. The '84 was no better than the '65.

But third gear on a straight smooth road was the best. They were fun cars!

Nope -- never knew a RWD car would do that --I've only owned Japs & Germans!

Damn, RWD cars are so much fun to have at a younger age. I look back on those years - burning up the tires, power sliding and doing 360's on ice in a empty parking lot, ....wheel hopping. You've missed out!

I learned more and had more fun on our deserted runway with snow all over it.

Could play Snow road warrior all day and not get hurt

I still miss the slide and catch of the RWD -- not as fast as a "clean" line, but sure is fun...

You know, although Camaros are "cheap" cars, I had a lot of fun with both that I had from age 19 to age 31. Kids do a lot of stupid shit with cars, and I did 90% of it myself. But, you gotta have fun when you're young and don't have much responsibility (like a wife and kids).

It's all a learning experience. You go out and see what the beast can do, just do it in a isolated area. Luckily, I never damaged any cars or hurt anyone. Looking back on it, I kinda miss those days.
