Vibration Problem CL-S 6MT 3rd & 4th under load
Posting this question for Snaps... He's at work and asked me to do it
Car: 03 CL-S 6 MT ~ 70k miles
Background: Rebuilt transmission installed about 2-3 months ago after having trouble with 3rd gear... bad griding noise when engaged. Car has been acting fine since.. until last week.
Current problem:
When in 3rd or 4th gear (fine in 1st and 2nd) There is a vibration when the engine is under ANY load... coasting is smooth, but the moment you step on the gas, the vibration starts again. I tried light, medium, and WOT loads, all produce the vibration starting in 3rd gear on up. The vibration is like an out of balance wheel or mildy warped rotors, you can feel it in the steering wheel.
The car is currently at our local Acura dealership (has 100k warranty) but they are baffled as to what it is either
They have replaced the tranny mounts, and inspected the motor mounts and said they were fine.
Initially when Snaps told me about the problem I thought it was the motor or transmission mounts.
Anyone have any ideas ?

I had the same exact issue your describing, under load the car/steering wheel would vibrate. One dealership said they don't know what is wrong. Took it to another dealer they determined that the inner CV joint had gone bad. They repaced the axle for that side of the car, since the joint is part of the axle (I think).

Just to give you some more information, the technician said that sometimes it is hard to determine which CV boot is causing the issue. It could either be the driver's side or the passenger's side. Fortunately, in my case, the tech was pretty certain the right hand side CV boot was bad. He must have seen signs of wear or cracking.

Well just got of the phone with my dealership and they have finally determined it was the axel. SO THEY SAY But they told me my warranty company has to come out and inspect it because its a 1400 dollar job. At first they said it would not be warranty because the cv joints werent warrantied and that might have cause it to malfunction. But my dealership said the joints wernt cut so it wouldnt be a prob. I swear my dealership always makes me feel like they are giving me the runaround. So they put me in a ford focus So just have to wait and see

Well actually they could cause the problem. Lowering springs, performance shocks & bigger wheels will increase CV wear.
I can see warranty denied because of it. So order both CV's from the online parts stores & have an aftermarket shop put them in. Also replace the axle seals.
