Urgent Engine Trouble

Last night at about 12:30 am or so i was driving home from the gym, around my house there was this puddle and i misjudged the depth. I went through and then my car just stalled, within 10 minutes i climed through the window and got in the water and pushed the car to where none of the car was under water.

All of the electrical stuff is working fine, the lights, even the auto timer for the shut off. The engine is not starting, and what my friend thinks is that the throttle control or whatever equivelent honda has to a distributor cap is just wet. and when it dries the car should start.

When i turn the key the engine just chokes.

My car is completely stock and not the water was about a little past my knees for a brief moment.

Thank you in advance.

Hopefully you didn't get any water into the engine. Or it may have hydro locked it! If a good ammount of water makes it into the combustion chamber it can cause *major* engine damage when the engine goes on the compression stroke. Normally the engine tries to compress a gas/air mixture. Not a water filled combustion chamber. It can bend connecting rods and or mishape your piston(s).

Hopefully you just clobbered some other part of the engine, like the ignition system. And your just not getting spark. Best thing to do after hyrdo locking the engine is remove the spark plugs, turn the engine over manually and let things dry out.

I have my fingers crossed for you! Do you have an aftermarket air intake?

Hopefully it is just a wet ignition system, and it'll fire up later.

I agree with what Siggy said... I'd just really hope you didn't hydrolock the engine. A good rule of thumb is that if you get stuck in a situation like that, DO NOT try and start your engine as you can do major internal engine damage as Siggy explained above.

Hopefully it's just electrical and will resolve itself.

but he has no CAI so to hydrolock his car he would have to be really deep in water.

Thats exactly what happened to my sisters Celicat GTS. She drove it through a puddle she mis-judged, the car stalled, 3 of 4 piston rods snapped

Don't matter if he has a CAI, that deep considering where the stock intake is, it is highly likely it sucked in water.

Pull the plugs just to see if it will turn over. then squirt oil in cylinders and run a comp check / comparison. Also try and get water out of intake system, then try and start.

On a stock intake, the resonator chamber's inlet is turned upwards... but if the water was knee-height... it would have gone in... has to be a LOT of water to get sucked up through a stock intake. It's not a 'distributor'-issue as you car doesn't have a distributor.

Does the car crank? If so... check your compression... this will tell you if you cracked something inside.

What qualifies as a solid liquid?

LMFAO

ya ya ya

I get the darwin award for that one!

Actually water is both a solid and a liquid depending on what temperature it is.

I think I should check my sleep deprivation before replying to any messages before noon. I could have worded that 10x better too.

Well, the easiest thing to do would be to open up your intake box. If you see that the filter is water damaged, more likely than not you have hydrolocked your engine. Since it's not really your fault (ie. no CAI installed), you can probably take it back to the dealer and have him warranty it for you.

If it turns over, it's not hydrolocked. Hydrolocked is when the cylinder fills with water and can't compress.

My guess is wet wiring.

Good luck.
