Upsetting day at the track

My best today was only a 13.99 @ 101mph w/ a 2.2 60'. I'm horribly disappointed.

I'm starting to wonder if the last visit to the garage last Monday had something to do with it. I had the rear main seal replaced (which required removing the tranny). I also had the timing belt and water pump replaced. Would any of these things have something to do w/ power??

I'll recheck the S/C belt tomorrow to see if maybe that was slipping. Ugh!! I'm very ready to dump this car after a bunch of 14+ second passes w/ a blower!!! Especially since my best is 13.4@105.

Well, the only thing I can think of is that they hooked the S/C up improperly and the car is pulling timing or something. Do timing belts need to have a "break-in" period?

I was running 3/4 tank whereas I usually run <1/4 tank. That can't be worth six tenths though.

How long has it been since you've checked the plugs?

About 7 days ago they were replaced w/ new plugs since the blower was out anyway. I'm wondering if they put the right ones in. I told them IK22 but the guy looked confused and made some comment about OEM says "blah, blah, blah" - to which I replied, no I need colder plugs. I don't know if they ever made it into the car. I'll pull one of the rear bank plugs and see. That could account for a good deal of the problems. Good call.

BTW, when the car is jacked up in the rear and the parking brake is off, is the wheels supposed to spin freely or is there always a tiny amount of rubbing between the rotor and brake pad?

Make certain OEM plugs weren't installed!!!!!! The standard heat range plugs will melt into the cylinder heads and then it'll be real fun getting them off. You could also really damage the cylinder walls from the added heat.

I called them and they said they put the exact same type of plugs back in the car as requested. I'll still pull one tonight to have a look for myself.

One thing to consider is that I was running 92octane vs. the 101 I usually do when I go to the track. I can't believe it would make THAT much of a difference though.

I started looking at Evo's and STI's yesterday. I'm loving the Evo MR in the "anthracite"-like color w/ body-colored BBS rims. They want $40k for it...yeah right!! If I get the Evo and add a stage 1.5 Vishnu kit I can run low 12's all day long (assuming I can shift).

White is for work vans, the MR looks hot in grey.

And it sounds like something is wrong, just check over everything before getting impatient.

Well, I went back to the track last night and ran a best of 13.6@106. The only difference was I had <1/4 tank and 4 gallons of it were 101 octane.

So, my 1/4 time is about .2 slower than my best but I'm back up to trapping 106mph instead of 104. I guess for daily driving I'll take the 106 over the 104 anyday.

MATTG - did you get the new car yet?

STI > EVO anyday. That sucks about your track times, maybe it is track prep. See if the other people running at the track are any slower than they normally are.

I think I've read the Evo beats the STI on the track in most reviews. I also think it looks better, but that's personal preference. Isn't the Evo aftermarket greater as well since they use the same engine in the US as they do in Japan???

the aftermarket is vast for both cars.

which is a good thing for me since the car i'm getting shares drivetrain and suspension from the STi. it's like a mid size STi.
