UGH! Got pulled over by a Trooper... 87 in a 65.. *long*

well, lets begin... i was in my Honda going about 92 on the Jersey Turnpike. my radar goes off instantly and i then see the trooper facing oncoming traffic at an angle as soon as the trees clear. damn! i didnt even have time to slow down. i was alone, so if i hit my brakes he would have definitely seen the drastic decrease. so instead i put the car into D3 and eased my foot on the brake slightly. as soon as i saw him i knew i was doomed. i was in the middle lane and then go into right lane and slow to 60. i look in my rearview and he's pulling out of his trap accelerating hard. i begin to pull over before he hits the lights. i stop, roll down the window: left hand out, right hand on top of the wheel. he comes up, gives me the whole schpeel and lecture and asks for my documents. i give him a few PBA cards with my documents. and he asks me where i got all these cards from. i say i have alot of friends in Edison PD and give the names of a couple guys. he was state police, but we were in Woodbridge, next city over from Edison. anyway, to make a long story short, i guess he felt bad for me cuz i told him i was late for a doctors appt. and he had to literally stick his head through the window to hear me cuz i lost my voice and was whispering the whole time. he asked me if i had any points, said yes, and he went back to his car and came back. he handed me a ticket not for speeding, but for "Driving a vehicle unsafely". ZERO points, minimal fine. according to him. he said if he gave me a ticket for 22 over the limit, i'd probably lose my license considering i have 4 points on there now. he was cool, he told me to be careful and to make sure he doesnt catch me speeding again and let me go. i guess he gave me a major break. i shook his hand and left. geez that was a close call.....! not gonna happen again..... at least for a little bit

You were smart to be courteous and have everything "ready" for him. By showing respect he cut you a lot of slack...tough job being a cop-you made it easier for him. You were very lucky since more than 20 over can be "go directly to jail"!!

PBA (Policemen's Benevolent Association) cards generally speaking is a card given to you usually by a close friend or family member. they get em around xmas, and the card is usually slipped into a xmas card. i have a crap load of 2000 PBAs, about 15 or so, all different kinds, PBAs, FOPs, NYC, NY State. NJ State Police card are HARD to get, yet they'll get u out of anything. The cards USUALLY get you out of most speeding tickets or traffic infractions. The only reason why i have 4 points on my license is because i got pulled over for speeding and didn't show him ANY cards. also, if given to STATE police, they work only maybe 70% of the time because the PBA is for local or county officers. The State Troopers have their own organization and their own cards, but they only get about 3 cards per year. local PBA's get about 10 per year with the option to purchase additional cards or stickers. a REALLY GOOD thing to have is a hand written note to a fellow police officer on the back of his business card saying to "extend courtesy" to a friend (me) or to state that I am a close friend, not some schmuck he gave a card to. yes, it's pretty easy to get a card from some cops if u do them a one time favor or cut em a deal, all the while you prob don't even know em. below are some shots of cards....

...oh yeah, forgot to add that cops can also take away the cards if what you're doing is REALLY stupid. i've heard of cops folding them up and throwing them into the highway, or even throwing them back at you as to say "i don't accept these for what you did".

Damn you bastard.

I got a ticket for 87 in a 65 just two weeks ago.

Good to know I'll be losing my license if convicted.

Damn you lucky SOB. Maybe if you had the CL-S they wouldnt a been so easy on you... cops just hate to see a young guy driving a nicer car then them.

I think PBA Cards are mostly an East Coast thing. Don't worry, you don't need them. Having money equates to about the same thing.

Oh Yeah, sure, here on route 3, in MA, A 2-lane HW, I see a lot of bad asses in some 4-beaters or some roll-prune SUVs doing 85 or more all the time. That is 30+ and most do drive in unsafe manner. The said thing route 3 in NH a is 3-lane, so new and so nice, you can easily do a 100... stlll posted at 55!!!

I don't understand--SLAM ON THE FRIGGIN' BRAKES!! Who cares what the cop thinks, it's the reading on the gun that matters. So he pulls you over and sez look I know you were going faster than the speed limit but I don't know how fast--slow down. He can't get you for slammin' on the brakes particularly where there is no one behind you since you are not creating any kind of hazard.

That's assuming he's already looking at you. If you are in a group of speeding cars, brake lights are going to draw his attention to you.

I tend to agree with Chief. Cops will probably give out more tickets based on radar readings rather than brake lights and diving front ends.

I know that in the past, a stiff application of the brakes has saved me from a ticket or two. Even after the instant on radar.
