A total Noob just lookin for some help...

Hey guys,

Well after a long time of being obsessed with Volkswagen Gti's and most of the "Euro" scene, i've switched my mindset quite a bit, now i am really enjoying browsing around and looking at CL's and am currently about to purchase one right near the end of summer.

Here are some of my questions ...
---------------------------------------------------

First thing i heard about CL's when i was readin about em was the Tranny? whats up with that, are all or nearly all CL's affected and will each car eventually have this problem , whats the deal.

Next up i've been having a little troubles getting the specs straight, been looking up a lot of Type S models that im interested in and a lot of them are mixing up HP and Torque and what not stating 260, then 270 HP just wana see what the actual specs are, possibly even a 0-60 Time if you guys know it ? ...

Finally Since im ultra nub, i've been lookin at some cars and i've found a couple different type S CL's and this following one stood out to me, just loving it.

2001 CL Type S

Now if anybody could explain somethin to me, the thing is that i'd rather have the 6 Speed Manual , but the only one i found was quite a long distance away from me, plus its the 2003 model and about 10 grand more then the one right there, and its a little out of my price range, so i was just wondering if this one would do me good as a starter CL, does the Automatic mean that its full automatic, or is there Tiptronic ? any chances that this ones tiptronic?

Well i guess thats about it. The reason im lovin the CL is just because it has 2 doors which is plenty enough for me because i just finished up school and goin to University starting in the Fall so this car would just be awsome, ohh and also hows the trunk space in the 2001 Model or 2003 donno if there is a difference, would you guys say its above or below average especially it being a " coupe " i guess ...

Thanks,

Julio

-The auto transmission is shit. And I fear that it'll break on me @ any second. (despite this, still love my car, until it hits 100,000 miles that is...)

-If you can, go for the 6 speed. Well worth the money, and the car will probably last you forever.

-No differnece in trunk space.

-And the engine is rated @ 260hp @ the crank.

-And yes. It does seem like every single transmission is made of glass. replacements don't seem to be any better as well.

-Search around in the 2nd gen transmission q&a section, there's a lot of name and location/mileage lists of all the people who have had transmissions replaced.

Time for Sleep pretty much notched up the whole thing. The automatic tranny is delicate as glass and presonally wouldn't recommend it. If you have the budget I would definitely purchase the 6spd, limited in numbers and No tranny issues what so ever. With it limited status I believe resale would be better off than the automatics. I personally had two tranny's replaced on my CL, but loved everything else about the vehicle.

If you're confortable with driving a manual trans, you will enjoy the CL much more if it's a 6MT. I've had both a 5AT and now a 6MT CLS and I can say for sure that the 6MT is a whole lot more fun to drive. You'll also appreciate modding a CLS 6MT a lot more too.

I'd just like to add that, I've got the 01 5AT, and I've never had a problem with the tranny. I'm at 72K now, and I'm not afraid of it breaking. I couldn't ask for a better car. I love it.

I thik the actual number of failed transmissions was quite low compared to the sales volume. Mine was automatic and I never had an issue in 42,000 miles.

Heh, thanks guys ...

I found one 6 Speed but its the 2003 CL type S, and it costs 10 grand more, and im just affraid that it might be too much especially for a student i suppose. And the trunk space issue is because my family runs a "Family Restaurant" like subs and burgers and the whole shabang, breakfast too lol ... and im going to be needing to shop groceries and stuff like that with the car like lets say at most 2 50 pound onion things and like 6 12 packs of coke would take up the max i'd ever go shopping for ? would the trunk space be enough?

Ohh and is every CL insured to the 100,000 Mile point to get the tranny replaced for free? or wut, i guess that would be 160,000 Kilometers here in Canada right?

Thanks

Julio

I have a '01 CL-S AT w/50K miles. Love the car! I've never/haven't had any tranny problems. The recall work was done on my car at around 15K miles. All '01-'03 CL's w/AT have a tranny warranty up to 100K. Like gto2050 said, there are a lot more CL's without a tranny problem than with a tranny problem. Just because a few people on this site have had multiple tranny's is no reason not to buy the car. My ex g/f bough the '03 6spd and although I did like it (a lot), for some moronic reason, I preferred driving my car over hers. I don't know, I guess maybe I'm gettin' old, I sit in traffic a lot and I would rather the car do the shifting for me. I personally don't think $10k is worth rowing the gears myself. My car is quick, even with the AT. Since I put my springs on, it'll chirp the tires from time to time at WOT from 1st to 2nd. If you are looking for the 6spd for exclusivity, I'd say go for it. Even though, almost anyone on this site will tell you, AT or MT, owning a '01-'03 3.2 CL is exclusive in itself because of it's rarity. Regardless of which one you decide to purchase, unless it’s been severely beaten, you’ll love it. Go for it!

PS: I hate the center console in the ‘03. Nothing but skinny water bottles and pop cans fit in the cup holders and there’s only one setting for the heated seats = “ON”

Including Taxes it would come to about 25000, but im pretty sure i could get a little lower then that ... cuz tax here is 14% ... so in cad its 31 Thousand converted to US is 25000 ish ...

Good deal or No? ... Ohh and a customer of my restaurant showed up in his 2001 CL and i got to check it out some more and the trunk area and it looks like its quite roomy back there, enough for grocery shopping and junk ...

Thanks,

J

25k is a rip off. Not sure about the Canadian market but in the midatlantic states you would be able to find a '03 6mt type-s for 18 to 20k.

You just can't compare the US and Canadian prices with only the dollar conversion. I was very hot on a car in NY (CLS-6 for $18K) and then found that by the time I got it home it would cost me $26K Can. and have the nuisance and expense of going down there to get it.

Car prices seem lower in the US, but Canadian buyers face a multitude of other taxes and surcharges when bring US vehicles north. Car values are a funcution of location... this is true even within the US. Calif values are very different than NY, just as Vancouver values are different than Toronto.

Only comparisons in the local market are valid.

I have 85k miles on my original automatic transmission and I've never had a problem...and I've got a supercharger too!

BTW, my car is still for sale and I live in Seattle if you wanna test drive it. Trust me, theres no comparison between a stock CLS and a blown one!

Currently asking $16k.

The only other 2003 CLS 6Speed i saw was for 29900 Canadian which was 2,200 More then the one close to me, and this one was in Victoria which is about an hour drive plus u have to be on the ferry for another hour and its more expensive so i donno, this one seems like a good deal, plus i'll have full warranty for 50 thousand kilometers which should be like 3.5 years the way i calculated it for my upcoming driving which is pretty good ...

Plus im pretty sure the value of the last generation CL S 6 Speed should hold up quite nicely too in a couple years right?

Thanks

I've had 8 bags of mulch in the trunk of my CLS before. It's got a decent sized trunk (huge if you compare it to the G35c)
