Tire Question

How is it that we would be able to put on tires that are a different size tha our stock ones??? If our car comes with 215/50/17's and you put on something else, say 225/45/17's or 230/40/17's, wouldn't they not fit on the wheels??? I mean, if the tire is 10-15mm wider then wouldn't the be too wide to fit on the wheel??? I just don't know much about this. Thanks. Also, how long are our stock tires good for?

Notice in the examples you gave the specs all ended in 17? That is how all the different aspect ratios are able to fit. As long as the hole in the middle of the tire is 17 inches in diameter it'll fit a CLS rim. What changes are the side walls and the contact patch. However, it really isn't that simple. You have to take into consideration if the tire will rub on the chassis once it is mounted on the rim. Also on a car like the 2001 CLS there is traction control, ABS, and stability assist to consider as well. All these systems will be affected by a tire that is a different size from stock. Hope that helps!

235/45-17" will fit our car in addition to the stock 215/50-17" tire. Some people even put 225/45-17" on the car (I don't know if these people have the Navigation system) -- but they seem happy.

Hope that helps.

By The Way -- If you need tires, and are uncomfortable with all of this tech stuff *and* are happy with your stock tires, just call Tire Rack (or your local discount tire dealer) when/if your tires wear out. Your stock tires should last quite a while.
