Things to look forward to on a new Acura coupe
#41
Just had an interesting conversation w/ the Fixed Operations Director of Ray Laks Honda who said Honda is building a multi million dollar plant down south so to manf. their own trannies. They have never built their own and have really taken a beating on the recent spate of problems we are all too familiar with. This may be a repizzle but I thought it was worthy of mention to those who didn't know.

Acura has seemed to be very laid back when it comes to big changes in their model lineup.

But even still...
many manfucturers have engines or other concepts that are known for their performance and stats.
How many of them actually end up on the production line after they do studies on whether people would actually buy it, maintenance costs, fuel economy and the like.
Now if you are referring to the new NSX engine, why would they put the same (or slightly modified) v10 in their new 2 door coupe?
Imagine the new v10 acura coupe outgunning the new M3 (v8), RS4, GTO, and G35 all in the same year. Highly unlikely IMHO.

yeah, but the tranny would explode anyhow. lol..
I'd be happy with the 3.5 v6. the 3.2 is just a tad too small. a v8 would be awesome tho. v10--not likely for their midrange 2 door coupe.

I thought Honda announced a few months ago that the new NSX was canned.
There must have been a lot of indecision cause they canned it near the last minute before it would have been a go, if I remember right. It was a V10. pictures are on the web.
(the current NSX stopped production in Aug/Sept I think.)

If acura does come out with a mid-range coupe, I'd picture it having a 3.5 v6, hopefully DOHC. V8 is unlikely for the first round of the new coupe, but if it does well, who knows maybe it'll progress into that later.

man, is it "Hate-on-Acura Day" today? Acura has a great product, but like any other car comes with trade-offs that apparently we owners choose to accept. Like other makes, they're also learning from their experience in the market as to what consumers want today. There's a good chance that Acura could introduce another performance coupe as other mfgrs, like Audi, decide to again offer a coupe. I've owned other Japanese cars as well as a number of BMWs, and I'm very happy with my 01 CLS. Let's be a constructive voice that can hopfully influence Acura to listen more to the performance crowd!

I've had 4 Acura coupes and loved them, but what makes me mad is Acura sees coupe buyers as also rans, they get around to us after they focus on sedans.
I waited -
8 years for a MT/6cyl coupe (under $80k) from 95 Legend coupe to the 03 CLS 6MT. Only 6 years if you wanted an decent automatic coupe - 01 CLS.
The G1 CL was automatic and shoulda been a Honda anyway, sorry G1s.
Now it's been almost 6 years since the 01 CLS came out, where's the coupe?
BMW always has a coupe, Infiniti has a coupe, MB has midsize coupes (no MT).
even Volvo, Cadillac, and Audi has conv Coupe. Honda Accord coupe but no Prelude.
Toyota - no 6MT/6 cyl midsize coupe, auto Solara if you can stand the looks of it, The Lexus SC is auto and also hard to look at.
New BMW 3 and Infiniti G upgrade will be out before any new Acua coupe.

Bad words about Honda/Acura are hard for me to profess b/c I have always loved the marque. I base this on their ability to build great engines, which is what they built their reputation on worldwide in motorcycles first, then cars, then Formula 1. But Christ, they keep building these mediocre looking cars w/ shitball transmissions I have no use for. Particularly w/ 3.2L 6's and no AWD. I want more power dammit! And just b/c I am middle aged doesn't mean I want a blah-mobile like the RL (sorry RL'ers)

The NSX was to be killed but moves by Lexus has made Acura re-think its strategy. After the HSC was deemed too expensive things got quiet. A V10 is what they say... but who knows. If they let the NSX die I will lose all respect for Honda.

Yeah. Racing is part of their legendary legacy. You can't kill off the NSX. That's one of the more stupid moves they've made. Mr. Honda him self would be rolling in his grave.
Me personally, I'd love to have some of the same features that the Legend had. Like motorized doors, the sex appeal, everything.

They say V10, but say you're going to have to wait till 2010 for it...

If not, the new G, and 330 coupe, along with some other rumored new models (Bmw M2 based on the european 1 series and a possible Supra) could make the coupe market very interesting...
Hopefully the coupe market will be exciting enough for Acura to come up with something to compete

I was in for service last Friday and asked the service manager about a new coupe'. He had heard nothing of a new coupe' but did hear that the RSX may go away and that a convertible TSX is coming. (I'm shaking my head.) How many TSX convertibles do they think they'll sell?
All of this talk about bad customer service - I don't see it. I've owed an Acura since 1994 and have always been treated well. I did lemon law an 03 CL-S 6speed in 2003 which took some time to get done, but it did get done. Other than that, the techs are careful with my car and do a good job.

Never found out. Car could not go down the road strait. It would pull hard (I mean really hard) to the right. Dealer tried to fix it three times and couldn't. New tires, alignments etc... So, I got a new one. The car was used as a demo before I got it. I suspect it had been beaten on but I don't know that. I will never by a demo again. They tried to swap me into another "new" 6speed with 300 or 400 miles on it and I said "NO!". "I want one with no, O miles on it." Which is what I got. Story ended happily.

Just a pinch. It was a little difficult because I was trying to maintain a good relationship with the service manager and the service advisors. I initiated the formal lemon law process without telling the service folks. So, the regional Amercian Honda Rep. went to them and said "we've been contacted by such and such". So, there was a little of "why didn't you come to us directly". My take was they kept giving the car back to me saying "it's fixed, we double checked everything". Then I would get in the car and it would want to take me off the road. So, I feel I gave them their chance to resolve the issue(s). I even gave the regional rep. a try at fixing it and he couldn't. He too gave me the car back saying everything was all set after working on it. So, I once again had him drive it and he said "I can't believe this etc........." He then asked what I would like and I said a new 6speed.

The G2 Legend coupes had motors that pulled the doors fully closed once you pushed the door shut, kind of like trunk closers. I was always having to tell passengers not to slam the door shut, but most are used to Fords and GMs and just slammed away.

A little better but still mighty clunky looking around the backside. I love BMW's, own a 330xi in fact but would not buy a 7 series. The wifey's looking for a 5 in a couple years. I'll whip her ass w/ a M45 Sport!

Well the prototype was so cool looking but Acura toned it down a lot for the 97 CL.
Besides that, I hate Acura more for not giving a 6MT and 6 cylinder on the G1 CL. The Legend Coupe 'replacement' was not that, and lots of coupe buyers left Acura then and never came back.
