Curious to know if Arizona has emissions testing, and ESPECIALLY if they have that visual inspection crap where they can fail you if they SEE something they don't like even if you car would pass the sniffer just fine.
Also do they have an exhaust sound level legal limit? Like I think most areas are 95db.
Just curious.

only the Tucson and Phoenix areas emissions test. if the car is less than 5 years old, it won't need testing though. Once it's older, it'll get tested every other year.
Last time I went for testing (for my 5.0), I did see them check in the gas tank filler area for modifications and they checked that all the smog equipment was still installed. They don't check for things like colored bulbs or if your brake lights work though; only smog related stuff
the law for exhaust states: "A motor vehicle shall be equipped at all times with a muffler that is in good working order and that is in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise." There's no dB level specified so that leaves it open to the officer's judgement. I hear a lot of ricers with loud fart pipes though so they must not be too tough on it..

Sounds good! So five years no emissions test? Excellent.
Also, when you say Phoenix and Tucson area... what determines the areas which are subject to the emissions testing... your zipcode?

yep, five years- no testing: http://www.adeq.state.az.us/environ/air/vei/exempt.html
testing is based on the county you reside in. Phx is in Maricopa county so all of it gets tested (along with the county Tucson is in)
