Supercharger noise??? experts chime in please
Well, something happened, what it is I don't exactly know. The supercharger is making a knocking noise that increases with rpms and it is silent when the pulley belt is disconnected. Anybody know what it could be before i send it off to ct-engineering?
I'm running the 3 lb pulley, and everything else seems to be fine. |
If there are no leaks (around the snout), I'd check to see if the S/C oil is adequate. Maybe a lower oil level woud cause additional noise. :dunno:
Can you be a little more specific as to where the knocking noise is? Like is it coming from the gear area of the S/C unit?. Or from the shaft? etc. |
:agree: where is the noise coming from? the SC itself, towards the belt side the shaft?
|
didn't smell any of the oil, and didn't see any leakage 9and I know how bad that stuff smells).
Sounds like the noise is coming from the shaft. and the noise seems like it just popped up, wasn't a gradual occurrence. |
is it boosting properly?

It could be a leak in your EGR valve it would make a loud popping sound thats intermitent.
For now, I doubt its something serious. Try pressing down on the EGR valve in an effort to seal it better and see if the sound goes away. |
You need to isolate the source and origin of the noise. Do you have an auto stethoscope? Since there is so much engine noise, it's difficult to hear where the noise is coming from. With the probe, you can hear if you have a bad shaft bearing or if the noise is coming from the rotor housing, etc.

I am sure you might have checked...
But make sure the belt isn't slipping or is too tight at idle. Sometimes the belt needs to be re-torqued on occassion. |

I don't want to think that the SC rotors heated up and expanded a bit to start scrapping at the housing. Usually the clearances are paper thin. You can also call Magnusson or Eaton and ask them :) |
