stock or upgrade...
What size of tire can go on a stock 17" rim for a CLS?
First of all why would you get a bigge size than the stocks and did anyone have any issues(rubbing, uneven readwear) by putting maybe a 225 45 17 or a 235 45 17? Will the vendor cover the tire considering it is not manufacturer recommended size?Does it make any difference in ride?

I've seen a 235/ 35 or 40 on the stock rim(looks kind of funny).
You get the bigger size for better handling + looks sharper. The reason that the manufacturer doesn't add bigger size is for a lot of reasons. 1. being that 215/ 50 are the standard tire for acure/ honda. Plus, most of the tires are all season tires. Most 235+ are summer tires, unless your driving a RWD or a truck.
As far as I know the vendor doesn't cover anything but defects in the tire. If you get a warranty from tire rack or discount tire they will cover some of the problems that my happen with the tires.
Last of all the tire diameter does make a difference in ride. The smaler the tire wall the harsher the ride. Going from a 50 series to a 40 wasn't that much of a difference in the ride. Not sure about going to a 35 series. Hope this helps noob.

someone give the man a straight answer... He deserves it. I would but I have no experience with bigger tires on the stock rims, I know many of you have though.

I really don't know the answer, but he's some info.
235's are not recommend on the stock 7 inch wide rim. The specs for 235's require a 7.5 inch wide rim minimum. Tirerack.com won't sell you a 235 tire if you tell them it's going on a 7 inch wide rim.
That being said, alot of people here are running the 235's on stock rims without problems.
If you do a search (235 or 225) you'll find alot of posts about people who have either the 235 or 225 tires on thier cars.
I'm still stock, so I'm running 215's still

different tires will affect ride, that's a given. it all depends on the compound and the thickness. think about it a bit and do your research on whatever brand of tire you want.

I have 235/45/17 Michelin Pilot Sport A/S on my stock '03 rims. The ride is fantastic, much better than stock, and the traction is great. I have a Comptech Drop w/ OEM struts, and NO rubbing whatsoever, even with four people and 150lbs in the trunk. Hope that helps-

Shortly after purchasing my new 03 CLS 6MT (more than a year ago), I replaced the OEM tires with Michelin P/S A/S 225/50/17s. For A/S tires, they handle much better than the OEMs and have a better ride quality IMO. I have the CT drop and haven't had any rubbing issues.
