yeah it's functional, as are all spoilers. they give you downforce on the rear. now is that useful for the CL? not really.. and yeah, of course it adds weight. if you want a decent look, just get the lip spoiler, probably weighs less than 1 lb.

I think the CL looks cleaner without the spoiler... But when I bought my car back in 2002, I got the oem spoiler installed by the dealer. Really wish I hadn't...
How the fuck is the spoiler not going to add weight ?? It's not like Acura developed some anti-gravity technology for the spoiler
IIRC the OEM spoiler comes with a stronger spring so that the truck pops up like it should without the spoiler... Maybe that's what you mean about adding weight ??

How is it a legitimate question? Does a wing have mass? Of course it does.
Everything you add to somethings adds to it's weight.
Let me ask you this, what weighs more, a pound of feathers or a pound of bricks?
Additionally, I just thanked the person that said what I was thinking, why not attack him?
I think you need to go get a fitting for your sign.

The spoiler properly installed adds 150lbs of down force at 75 miles per hour. I installed mine upside down so it provides 150lbs of lift at the same speed so my CL type S weighs 150lbs less than yours at 75 mph. I'm thinking of installing a 2nd one on my roof so I can shave another 150 lbs off

You need a big ugly wing to get enough surface area to produce any useful amount of downforce. Your car's big heavy ass is all the downforce it needs.

Whatever a spoiler does you need to be going pretty fast for it to make any difference... I doubt many ever reach those speeds anyway so let's face it, the spoiler is for looks mostly.

Those aren't spoilers, they're wings. Look at them, they're freaking huge and they stick way out into the air flow. How hard do you think you'd have push down on that rinky dink piece of plastic on your car before it broke? It might produce as much down force as having a bag of groceries in the trunk at 100 mph... at best.
A ~3,500 pound FWD car doesn't need any extra downforce. The ass end isn't going anywhere.

I whole heartedly agree that trying to get more rear downforce on a front drive car makes absolutely no sense at all. Essentially it pushes the back down, lifting the front up and the front wheels are the ones powering the car and also directing it around a corner.
It would actually be more practical (real stupid looking but practical) to put a downforce generating spoiler on the nose of a front drive car so you are pushing the drive wheels down.
I certainly don't believe that the CL spoiler does anything more than look good.

mine came with the OEM spoiler. im 50/50 on it, i do like the lip spoiler though. when i was out in cali a few months ago i saw a 2nd gen CL typeS with a lip spoiler but the bottom came down far enough that it had a half circle cutout for the A badge- meaning it wasnt some universal fit M3 spoiler, it was made for our car, or an acura. never have seen on since then or on here.
anyways on another note if your thinking about putting a system, or even just one 12'' sub (what i have) in your car the spoiler is so wide that it flexes and rattles a Lot

spoilers are useless unless you have RWD or AWD. CL6 is correct a FWD car will only produce but so much top speed and it won't ever reach a high enough speed for it to be really functional. RWD and AWD at very high speeds without a spoiler could spell disaster for you and your car.

^^ That's not entirely correct. As I mentioned earlier, a spoilers main effect is that disrupts the airflow and reduces the vacuum on the car. It depends on a lot of factors but the spoiler on the CL will be doing something at highway speeds. It's debatable whether or not what it's doing is useful. A car being FWD has little influence on it's top end. Acceleration is definitely a lot more limited though and that's why you don't see any one building a FWD car with more than ~300 HP.
They do make wings for the front. Look at the saloon cars, many of which are FWD (the RealTime TSX for example). They often have real funky looking front bumpers with several wings built into them.
I also thought of another function that spoilers sometimes serve, and that is to reduce lift at high speed. When the TT first came out there were reports that at very high speeds the back end would generate lift due to the shape of the car. When combined with crosswinds it was deemed dangerous enough that they issued a recall and put a goofy looking spoiler on the back. Those spoilers are effectively adding downforce by disrupting the airfoil effect created by the car's shape. This may be what the 911 is doing as well since it is also fairly wing shaped.

Look, I never said it made any sense to have rear downforce on a front drive car and I never said the factory wing spoiler on a CL had any purpose other than appearance.
But to think that the air hitting a spoiler doesn't cause down force just because it's front drive is crazy. If you disconnected the rear axels on a STi and drove it 100 mph, it's still gonna have 50 lbs of extra pressure pushing down on the back of the car
The air isn't smart enough to decide whether your car is FWD RWD or AWD. That's your job.
