And, I would love to have had the option to get a 6-speed in '01. Although, at the time, my back and knee were all screwy, so I probably would have gone with the auto, anyway. It was right before I lost all my weight which, I think, exacerbated my back pain...and my ex-wife couldn't drive manual. :shakehd: I had traded my 528e for my '98 3.2 TL-P, cuz I couldn't deal with the pain of a manual back then.

CLS 6MT Navi
I'm biased but I don't like automatics and the 6 speed CLS is the best engine/tranny I've driven in this price range. The CL should never have been offered without the 6 speed. Last Acura to have this combo besides the NSX was the 95 legends, but now you can get it in an Accord coupe
for $28k! but not in a recent Lexus or Toyota that I know of.

TQ > MPG
Auto's are nice for people who have to deal with tons of rush hour stop & go, or for people who use their car as transportation and nothing more.
I would not even consider buying an automatic CL-S regardless if it was faster, made more hp, or had better resale value. I enjoy shifting it myself (which SS 100% does not let you do). It takes alot more skill, especially with the CL-S6, to drive smoothly and quickly than a comparable automatic tranny. My 10yr old brother can push a pedal all the way down and keep the steering wheel straight. My point is that automatic transmissions are B-O-R-I-N-G. It takes all the fun out of driving the car. :o
The TL-P loaner I had was pretty dissapointing as far as the "performance automatic" it was supposed to have. It shifted NO faster than my gf's Maxima, which has just a plain-jane 4 speed auto, and it wouldnt let you hold 1st gear or downshift into it, which is pathetic. Even the Mazda 6s that I drove let you hold all the gears until it was bouncing off the rev limiter, and it would downshift into 1st.

i would have rather had a 6mt when i got my car in '01. but i wanted this car and i got the auto. do i regret the decision? no. i still love this car even w/ the problems it's had.
will my next car be a 6mt? hell yes. but until then i'm happy w/ what i have.

Its really not that hard to drive in traffic.. dunno what the fuss is about.
Just dont drive bumper to bumper and you can stay in 1st gear perfectly fine.

Is it really THAT noticeable. I know it pulls a lot harder in the higher RPM's, but how about below 60mph? Is the difference worth the cash in the 0-60 range???
(No disrespects for the previous question, b/c I know the difference it makes in the higher rpm's, but that would be at higher speeds. And since I can hit 60mph in second gear in SS, I would have to be on a track or just speeding on the highway somewhere to feel it in the higher RPM range. I don't like to drive that fast ALL the time)
Thanks for the honesty in advance.

Why save your “fun” driving just for the weekends.
I have a blast driving everyday even if it’s just to the office & back.
I’ve been driving since 1985 and all but TWO cars I’ve owned have been stick shift.
My first car and the two years with my first CL-S Slush box.
I have about 30,000 miles with autos and close to 400,000 on stick.

It uses a two way electronically controlled clutch with two concentric input shafts (one inside of the other). As stated in one article, think of the clutch as being your two hands clasping one another and then alternately squeezing one another. Gears 1, 3, 5 are tied to one shaft. Gears 2, 4, 6 are tied to the other. When in 1st, and accelerating, 2nd is already engaged. When the shift occurs the clutch just presses the other way and since the gear is already engaged it happens immediately. Once in 2nd, 1st is released and 3rd engaged waiting for the shift to occur which is by means of reversing the clutch direction again. And so on…
Downshifts are the same with matching revs so it is slightly delayed. The only down side is when there is more than a single gear change desired, say from 4th to 2nd. In this case it has to disengage all gears and re-engage. But this still only take the typically amount of time as a manual would take to accomplish the same thing.

one thing i dont think that has been mentioned so far, is that the torque converter, while providing some benefits, it actually screws us elsewhere.
its in there where we get the majority of power loss compared to a manual. especially when it builds up heat, which decreases performance furthurmore. for me though, i am happy with the auto. there are times that i want a manual, but when you are with a girl or are going home late at night, nothing beats the easy drive using D5.
i must admit though that my next car will be manual, but thats only because i am so young and can deal with all the shifting.
