And some additional sales figures...
Among cars, here are the big winners, those with more than 10,000 additional sales compared to their year earlier performance: Kia Rio, +30,544; Volvo S60, +21,237; Honda Accord, +19,259; Nissan Sentra, +16,499; BMW 3-Series, +14,338; Dodge Stratus, +13,988; Lexus LS 430, +13,012; Kia Optima, +12,925, and Lexus IS 300, +10,187. The Chevrolet Impala almost made the cut at plus 9,675, so is worth mentioning as it may surprise some people.
Among trucks, the list is longer: Ford Escape, +92,682; Chrysler PT Cruiser, +50,604; Toyota Highlander, +47,583; Toyota Sequoia, +39,373; Chevrolet Tahoe, +29,046; Hyundai Santa Fe, +28,971; Mazda Tribute, +27,106; Toyota RAV4, +25,923; Acura MDX, +23,933; Jeep Liberty, +21,048; Pontiac Aztek, +17,904; GMC Envoy, +17,503; Suzuki XL-7, +2,820; BMW X5, +11,823, and GMC Yukon, +10,383.
There are some conclusions, which can be drawn, however. Obviously, and it comes as no surprise, trucks are where the action is — just look at the huge gains compared to cars and in a slightly smaller overall market for trucks.
Clearly, just as we have been reading, Toyota is finally making a dent in the large pickup market and GM has made a tremendous comeback. The much-maligned Aztek is bringing some business to Pontiac dealers who are frequently dualed with a GMC franchise and thus are reaping a double dip. While Rendezvous didn't make the cut, it's just recently on sale and will benefit from its better looks and a hungry dealer body who've had no "truck" until now.
Moreover, the Korean passenger car brands — though still small in overall volume — are having the rest of the market for lunch. Small wonder. They're buying market share by offering 10-year, 100,000-mile warranties and REALLY low prices. For instance, a local Kia dealer is advertising the entry level Rio for $7,495, thousands of dollars less than other entry brands — no doubt luring a lot of otherwise would-be used car buyers, too.
To my eye, the Koreans also finally have their styling right with standout models compared to some of the look-alike Japanese cars. Of course, they're selling out of bankruptcy, overcapacity and a totally walled-off home market.
And despite a soft economy, it is significant that the big-car gainers include upscale imports BMW, Lexus and Volvo.
You can draw some of your own conclusions from the lists above. When you take the time to put a microscope on vehicle sales reports, rather than relying on business page journalists who interview stock analysts – sort of the blind leading the blind — you can learn a lot more about what is going on in the marketplace.
