Smoked a Vette...
Well monday night, went out to eat, pick up some goceries, etc. in the CL-s. Anyway I had been driving alongside this vette, with thumping stereo, tinted windows, wing and what looked like aftermarket exhaust tips, not sure if it was a full exhaust or not.
He was in R lane I in left, he was fooling around in traffic up to the light that turned, 2 lanes left with advance onto the highway. I made the light he didn't (went through on yellow the car in front of him stopped). About 5 miles or so later I can see this car coming up fast. He goes past i pull out behind him and pace him. we pass a few cars and he pulls back in the right and jumps on his brakes slows to about 65 or 70 from about 85 or so, downshifts and is now got his car surging forward obviously wanting to go. I oblige. Run from about 65 or so to about 100 putting about 1/2 car between us (1.5 lengths) = ricer flyby. He then slows up again as do I same thing again, even with him jumping on me first. We do it a 3rd time...yes he's beaten down again. The almighty vette (the cocky owners call it the only american sports car) goes down to import luxo coupe. I guess if i had the SS it would have been too funny, but this probably hurts his ego much worse.

well ya, just wanted to bask in the glory for a bit.
It was an early C4, the fancy hubcap looking 16" rubber, as i said what looked like tips. a ghetto wing, window tint. Based on the way it ran i'd figure it was a cross fire 84 or 85 car and not a later tpi and definitely not an lt1 car.
At least he thought his car was fast, kind of a dark age for the vette i guess.

I'm not a big vette fan in that I want to drive one but the later C4s had 300 hp and some had 330. I wouldn't exactly call that 5hitty, especially given that they are pretty damn light. A mid nineties C4 would school you.

yep the C4s were ok runners with the LT1 (91-96), mid 13s, LT4 in 96 for low 13s/hi 12s; the L98 88 i think to 90 were low to mid 14 sec cars. Pretty much all of them would beat a cls. The L98 cars could probably be handled, or at least paced at speed, but off the line should beat the cls. The later LT1 cars should beat us up and down, stock v stock.

gonna call you on that. The 96 gran sport, and even 96 6 spds with LT4 are nice runners from the factory. True the C5 platform is better, but the C4 isn't crap either. These things can handle pretty well and have some nice power...even LT1s would stomp us pretty good.
Also, don't forget the zr1, great highway runners and cars that would trap 110-114.
Oh and go back to the late 60s and early 70s, the big blocks, 427 and 454 were stout runners to say the least from 390 to 435hp on the iron block and the all aluminum 427 with 12.5:1 compression kicking well over 500 hp. Those were some pretty awesome cars.

If i wouldnt have experienced this i wouldnt believe that he beat a c4 but trust me..I HAVE DONE IT TOO.
It was a white 92 or 93 c4 We started at a traffic light...(mine is a 6spd too) Trust me we were dead even till 80mph..!!! It was a fun race and the guy stooped to say "Its not tuned properly"..

Ya it was an easy kill, an early c4 for sure. Probably indeed a 'misfire' induction. Either way it's nice to see them go down.
It's even better when you take a C5, including a z06 here or there with my camaro SS that i bought with 2k miles on it for less than 1/2 what they paid. I've been running a good part of this summer on my nitto drag radials and even a z06 unless run really well can be beat to 100.
As far as a 92 or 3, it's possible esp to 80 with a botched launch from the lt1. An LT1 vette should run mid-upper 13s at about 102-4 mph, plenty enough to gun down even a 6 spd cls. However a very similar looking l98 tpi car will run low 14s at 96-99 mph very similar to a 6 spd cls.

not every z06, but it's consistantly 12.8 to 13.0 which is enough to catch a z06 or 2 who doesn't nail his launch. Up top i'm beat that's for sure. But off the line it's a drivers race. For a good part ofthe summer i was rolling on my drag radials so this thing is easy to launch on the street.
simple things like a cut out, cold air lid, MAF sensor, and a few other free mods has this car trapping 108 mph. My brother's 99 m6 car with shorty headers and offroad Y, cold air, free mods (no maf) traps 110 (best was 111.1). These numbers are right on an average driven z06.
Just like the cls may surprise an LT1, mustang GT, maybe even an LS1, down low where a good launch and similar power can make a race interesting. However, take your CLS and try to roll against an LS1; that's like me taking my SS And trying to roll against a viper. Those extra 100 wheel HP come in handy up top, i might take him off the line when he bogs (almost impossible) or lights them up and hold him off to 90 or so, but then he goes by.
