Smoke from Air Vents

So yesterday I was leaving work and got on the highway. About 5 minutes into the drive I decided to close all of the windows and turn on the A/C.

When I turned on the A/C, a poof of white smoke/vapor or something came out of the vents!! Freaked me the hell out!

Now it was a very very Humid and hot day yesterday, could this just be some sort of condensation or something else related tothe high humiduty yesterday that got pushed out of the vents when i turned it on? The smoke/vapor? only lasted for about 2 seconds, everything seems fine with the system for now.

thanks

You guessed it, condensation. The bad news is that there is probably an obstruction in the drain tube in your AC condensor box, leaving a bit of water behind. You really shouldn't get "fogged" by your AC at all.

turn on your AC and wait for the drip under the car from condensation run-off. If you get a fair amount quickly, your probably still in good shape. If not, then you may have to find the tube and get some good long pipe cleaners to unclog the tube.

Mine does the fog thing consistently since day one & I get plenty of drainage from my a/c.

I live in a fairly humid area though...probably has more to do with it than a clog.

This is normal. Both my Cl's did it. Only happens when it's really humid though. Some days I can sit at a light & see the smoke air coming out of all the vents. It is a bit freaky.

Just means your A/C is working well! The warm air in your car can suspend a ton of moisture. The cold air coming out of the A/C vent can hold very little. When the cold air comes out of the vent it condenses the water that is suspended in the warm air causing a visible cloud. Open a freezer on a hot day and you will see the same thing. Perfecly normal and actually an indication of a good cold output from the A/C.
