Smog equipment in California and horsepower

(repost) I bought my car in Las Vegas in February, an 03 CL-s 6 speed, but it seems to be originally a californa car, and I have always heard that California smog requirements have extra horsepower detracting equipment installed on all cars..anyone have any details on this for our CL's and any tips on how to remove the extra stuff??

i've never heard of any extra power robbing smog equipment on California cars. I've also never heard of manufacturers building cars differently for different states. I know CA has strict smog laws but I dont think they require car makers to put in extra equipment...but who knows...maybe im wrong?

Window stickers usually have an item like "50 state emissions certification" listed. That means that the car passes Cali's BS rules and since ours is the toughest in the country, its automatically passable in every other state. I'm pretty sure its a Federal crime to dick with the pollution controls on a car even if your state doesn't inspect as tightly as Cali. And the cars are the same no matter where you buy them. Otherwise Cali dealers would be advertising 260HP CL-S's and Nebraska dealers would be advertising 270HP CL-S's.

For one thing in CA you can't mess with the cat converter. NOt sure about other states. If you want you could put in a high flow cat.

if i remember correctly, some cars come (or at least used to come) with different exhaust only in cali to comply with cali emissions. mustang being one of them. cl, however, was always a "clean" car and did not need to be modified.

Back in days of yore, cars were separately 'smogged' for CA. A catalytic converter was not always standardly equipped (we're talking about 25 years ago or more). Now that most (all?) states require a certain level of emission standard, most cars are made to comply with this factory.

California and the C.A.R.B has set standards for emission requirements that most all states now enforce.

Register your car with the DMV, do the required paperwork and inspections, and you'll be fine.
