Run in with a SL500

Just driving back from dinner and the computer store, I was crusing along on a 2 lane 40mph street with the windows down & stereo at a reasonable volume (not bumping at any means). This 4th generation SL500 conv. w/ AMG block rims behind me decides to floor it and pass everyone in the fast lane for no apparent reason. So we come to a light with 3-4 cars ahead of us and he looks over with a smirk & has his merc stereo turned up with the speakers farting. So I put on busta's "light your @ss on fire" on my Rio and cranked it up. I look over & he stares at the car infront.

Later we get on the highway and he just tails me the whole time around 75-80mph. We get off on the same the highway junction (45mph turn) and I thought screw this loser, so I took the turn at 65 in 3rd gear and floored it. He followed as I heard his V8 downshift, but that thing was SLOW. Even with his ~300hp/300lb-ft V8 & we were going up a slope, he was a good 5-7 car lengths behind when I shut it down at the end of 3rd. I changed lanes to take my exit and he did a fly going about 100. Prick wouldn't even look over.

Ronnie i really hope you don't believe that your car is faster then his, don't be rediculous. First of all you were on a turn so what did you want him to do, hit you off the road. Second its not like he was driving a manual, so you have the advantage of keeping your car at a higher rpm which is better for climbing. When i hear stories like that it makes me laugh cause i remember back to the old days when i used to drive a old honda and it was a 4 cyclinder and i used to try and race people with better cars. I'm sure that guy was just laughing at you cause your not in his league.

If i was the driver of the SL i wouldn't have bothered to race you up the hill either - waste of gas.

I get people trying to race me in their sunfires, civics, and crapaliers all the time and i just peel out fast then go the speed limit.

Um, I have news for you... those SL500's really aren't that fast. They may have a 302hp V8 but they weight over 4000 lbs.! They are rated "Acceleration1 0-60 mph in 6.1 seconds" so even from a stop a CL with headers has a chance. On the freeway it's any man's race

rice - I was on 52W & 5N. The guy was probably around late 30s-early 40s.

reddly - I believe our car should be able to hang with him. I am talking about a 4th gen (1989-2002) SL500 that can run mid-low 6s to 60 NOT the new 2003 SL500. I think it should be close as they run the quarter around 14.5s.

Let me explain here: First, when I took that turn he was tailing my @ss the whole time as I can hear his V8 churnin' behind me. After the turn I started to put some distance between us, but it was still pretty close (1-2cars). After a while he probably realized that his cocky @ss was not going fly by me, so he probably gave up and by the end of 3rd, I was far ahead. Second, I have SS and he has his slushbox as well, so no advantage to me.

I'm sorry if this is too far-fetched for you guys. It just seems to me that if this guy wasn't going to give me the time of day, why would he tail me and accelerate slowly to 100mph+? I'm sorry, but if I blew his doors off right from the start I would say he wasn't trying, but his engine was making some serious revs.

the only place you'd beat him is off the line, and thats cause our cars are much lighter. Have you ever drove a V8? My friend has an old LS400, V8 lexus. Of course its not a fast car, but at higher speeds his car would fly. Thats where the V8 really comes into play. No one buys a SL500 and expects it to be a stop light racer. I have to imagine from 50 mph that guy would have blew your doors off. By the way, V8 are loud no matter what they usually do.

Well, I dunno what happened b/c we started at 65ish, so unless his big V8 is WAY out of tune, he was trying. And to answer your question, yes I have driven many V8s - 1988 420SEL, 1992 LS400, 2003 E500, 1997 F355 just to name some cars my parents have. They are definitely accelerate well at the top end, but our cars are pretty good thru 3rd, so that is where I stopped. Anything faster, we would get pulled on real fast.

Thanks Mike. Unfortunately, I recently moved up north to the Bay Area after I finished up grad school at UCSD. Thanks for the good times in SD.

Hey Ronnie... After looking at your pics, I think I might have saw you last Friday in SD on 94 about 10 pm. Or someone else with the exact rims.

Reddly9007 i really hope you don't believe you know what your talking about, don't be ridiculous (spell it right next time). First of all he shouldn't have been speeding anyways, if he had the nerve to speed in a straight line, why wouldn't he in a turn. Second, it's not like Ronnie was driving a manual either; the SS doesn't matter. The MB downshift when the pedal is pressed all the way, so both being autos, i doubt there is an advantage. When i hear replies like that it makes me laugh and i want others to laugh too. I'm sure a couple guys are just lauging at you because your intelligence is not in our league.

i doubt anyone buys a SL500 to race at all.

have you looked at Ronnie's sig, i know headers alone should put over 20hp to the wheels, and he also has an intake. This puts his cars close, if not at 300hp (not at the wheels of course), but then again i don't think the MB is rate at 300hp/300tq at the wheels either.

By the way, are V8 engines really that loud? no matter what they do? even when it's off?

By the way, your the coolest guy i've seen on this board

Hmmm did you by chance live in the Warren Grad apts? From your sig, I believe I always saw your car parked there (always had jocked your Tantrums). If so you prolly saw my car there (the one which USED to have the blue/ion headlights on the silver AV6)

.................................................. .................................................. .
And about La Jolla/SD, there many people with "expensive" and "fast" cars with big egos, from porsches, bmw, benz, nsx etc who will speed in city streets and highway just to "front" their ride without any care to other drivers on the streets (this goes the same for "ricers") I wouldn't blame Ronnie for trying to humble them (of course having safety in mind also).

your CL-S might be quick, but the only reason you stayed ahead was because you probably got on it first. That makes the biggest difference in the world if the cars have anywhere close to equal power. I'm not doubting you at all, just saying that it doesn't really sound like it was a fair race at all. You probably could beat him in a 0-60 race, but after that any benze 500 would pull on you.

(you should know this, cause you said your parents have a new E500) my dad has one too. Go race your dad from a roll in the E500 and you'll see his tail lights for sure.

Yea I am done with UCSD also, and I also miss SD/La Jolla, that place was actually quite nice the time I was there. One thing I don't miss is the 805 and other fwy traffic! hehehe

Well in general a race is all about driver I mean, shoot if you look at the pro. esp. in the Le Mans series, when it all comes down to is that who is the better driver right?
Tru that he may have gotten a start on the benz but if a car initiates a race and he is in the disadvantage...his bad rite?

I see everyone's opinion here on this racing point but to me a kill is a kill.

blo2ck - I see you point and no, I wouldn't go against the E500...especially since it costs twice as much and it's a 300hp+ V8. It's way too fast now since my dad just got Renntech Stage 1 put in (ECU & Airbox).

Once I save up some $$$ and hopefully Dean will be shipping 3.5L conversions soon, then I'll take on the 500.
