Review and Track Times: Comptech S/C + HBP
First off I gotta thank Victor (FigDJ) for the opportunity to purchase his barely used supercharger at such an amazing price. Tischer Acura did the install and they did a fabulous job of swapping the blower from his car in to mine, and installing all of my accessories that Victor didn’t have in just two days. Thanks Smitty, Scalbert, allmotor, blue, and Chap for answering all my questions about thousands of different things. (Sounds like I’m winning an award eh? )
I had the Comptech supercharger, Comptech B-Pipe, Comptech high boost pulley, B&M transmission cooler, Mugen thermostat and fan switch, Autometer boost and fuel pressure gauges, and A-pillar gauge pod installed today. I also replaced all 3 belts.
The amount of power is amazing. It is a totally different car. I’ll be in 2nd gear and it will feel like 1st before the blower. Using 4th or even 5th gear to pass on the highway is a breeze, the car just flies more than I ever thought it would. The blower whine is definitely there and the sound is quite intoxicating.
At idle the vacuum is sitting pegged at 30 and the fuel pressure is around 29psi. At ¾ to WOT fuel pressure is pretty much pegged at 100 psi and boost is a little over 6psi from what I can tell on the gauge. When I’m just cruising the vacuum is again around 30 and fuel pressure is between 35 and 40psi.
The addition of the Comptech B-pipe made the car much louder at idle, cruising, and at WOT. I didn’t expect it to get that much louder than the Comptech axle-back exhaust was but it did. I will definitely be installing the Comptech quiet tips I have in the garage.
I drove for about 15 miles before I really got into the boost to make sure everything was running smoothly and it was. I did have one scare tonight coming home. I was WOT from about a 15 MPH roll. VSA kicked in around 5500 rpm because the tires began to break loose slightly. It shifted fine into 2nd and I ran it all the way through 2nd gear. When it came time to shift to 3rd gear (the car was in D5, not SS) it just bounced off the rev limiter about 4 times. I immediately got off the throttle and slowed down. I don’t know why the transmission didn’t shift when it was supposed to but I hated the feeling I had when it started pegging the limiter. After that happened, I cruised around for a while, (I put almost 100 miles on the car tonight), in SS mode and then went WOT again and it shifted fine in all gears using the manual mode. No more D5 for me, SS only.
I did manage to get to the track tonight, (are you surprised?), I stayed for about an hour and a half, maybe 2 hours and I got 3 runs in. Great weather tonight 53-55 degrees. My first run I had bad wheel hop all through the 60’. I didn’t even torque brake the launch like I did before the S/C install. I just left from idle and got in it. Still managed a 2.2 60’ but it didn’t feel good. I also left it in D4 because I wanted to watch all of the gauges to make sure things were kosher and didn’t want to be distracted by shifting. The next two runs I got a much better start; both 2.1 60’s. Also with D4 and leaving from idle.
Now for the numbers; for comparison I included by best ET from before the S/C was installed.
105.92 MPH is screaming fast by the way. I should be in the neighborhood of 290-300whp with numbers like that. I know mattg trapped about that with nitrous and he was around 300whp. A dyno will soon follow this thread. Also back to back 13.558 and 13.559. This could be quite the bracket racer. Pics will follow later, it is dark out and I can't find the cable to download pics to the computer.

congrats. great numbers.
i think those are the quickest j32 auto s/c times we have seen.

Matt,
I think it shifted to 4th just as I crossed the line. With the intercooler and more boost it will definitely be forced to use 4th gear before the end of the 1/4 mile. Although I'm considering running a different pulley set up (max boost pulley and stock alternator pulley) to get about 7-8psi instead of 8-9psi. Don't want to kill the transmission immediately.
Oh an the IMRC is disconnected for those who may ask.

A scary moment at the track too. My 2nd run was against a stock 350Z 6 speed. Some how he managed to lose control, spun a complete 180 degrees and smacked the wall on my side of the track before the 8th mile. Luckily I was way ahead of him (boost ) But I don't know how he lost control. He smacked the wall on the passenger side pretty hard. He's lucky he didn't hit head on. His girlfriend was also in the car and obviously she was very frightened. They both made it out fine, but the guys car is F'ed. Scratched up both passenger side fenders. Body damage wasn't that great. Although he totally broke a tie-rod or a spindle on the front suspension because the passenger side front tire wouldn't move with the steering wheel. He also cracked the caliper on that wheel. Thank god for boost, if not he may have smacked right into me.

"Hot lapping" the CL-S no longer gives me faster times like it did before the S/C.
Between my 1st and 2nd run the car cooled down for 70 minutes. The MPH increased by 0.7 and I dropped 2 tenths off the ET.
On my 3rd I only had 20 mins of cool down and I ran the same ET (thanks to a better 60') but the MPH dropped 1.5 MPH

Did you try and have a tranny replacement? I don't want that to happen all the time

Thanks again for all your help Steve.
Also, Jason from Speed Distributors was a HUGE help. He actually called the dealership doing the install and suggested methods for them to try to get the stock belt on with the HBP. They didn't listen, but the effort was a HUGE sign of dedicated customer service. I only spent $75 for the pulley and I easily had over an hours worth of phone conversations with them. Anyone else I forgot to thank..... Thanks!

So basically all your mods gained you ~ 10mph over stock, right? That pretty decent I think. Especially for only 6psi. You should be ~107mph with an intecooler and more boost.
A 6 speed with the same mods as you would probably be, what like low 13's @ 108-109mph? Traction would be an extreme biatch tho, any plans on dyno'ing it to make sure its tuned good?

I'll be doing a dyno shortly, maybe as soon as next Saturday.

Without being able to see the problem, they could not do it under warranty, which I can understand. I drove it for a couple of months w/o the blower, and ended up selling the blower kit to buy gear for a new boat I bought. It's been 6-7 months without a hitch, and it gets beat up every time I get behind the wheel, 57K miles in 20 months.

So what did you do, just shift before redline in 2nd all the time?

Nice track times and congratulations on the s/c. I need to get to the track now that the weather has cooled down and see if I can match your times! My last run, temps were in the low 80's and I ran a 13.67 @ 103. Your time will be tough to beat but I think we have about the same mods.

I'm wondering how well your tranny is going to hold up with all that new power. Unfortunately the 2nd gen TL-S/CL-S trannies are fragile. Heck, my TL-S is on its 3rd tranny on a CAI!!
Anyway, good luck and nice times. Enjoy all that new power!!!
