does the fcc id have to match for the remote to work or will any cl/tl remote work?

I know this is a stupid question, but I was going to get a "black with red lettering" fob instead of the silver one

Yes - FCC #'s must match in order for the unit to work. You can open up the fobs and swap the guts if the case is similar.

What he said. I just replaced the guts into a new case.

both of those FOBs work, the older black ones, and the newer silver ones, i did a thread about this months ago, and someone said they would put it in the FAQ but it never happened. Just make sure the FCC ID's match and they will work. i believe the older black ones and the silver ones only differ in like one letter or one number at the end of their FCC ID...but the rest are the same..i guess the last number or letter was just to differentiate between the old remotes and the new...good luck
