I think there’s some kind of liquid/chemical in there that controls the day/night auto-dimming function.
Just a guess, but maybe the seal was broken and it’s leaking out?

Sounds like your mirror is going. The circuit board starts to fry itself when the auto dimming feature starts to go bad. Some mirrors leak ,some don't.

It's a known problem. The dealer will take care of it.

I just noticed mine going last night. the middle still darkens, but the very top and very bottom do not dim anymore

I am at 51,700 mi. Do you think I have a chance of getting it covered under warranty?

Holy crap, exact same thing happened to me. My saga:

First time I took it to the dealer, they told me it wasn't a problem. It was like talking to a f'ing rock, they just wouldn't/couldn't see what I was showing them. They said to come back if it got worse and they would replace it under warranty...

So when it got worse I came back, and it was the same B.S. runaround. They still refused to admit that there was anything wrong, they had never seen anything like it before, blah blah blah; but out of the goodness of their hearts they would replace it...

but of course they didn't have any spare mirrors, so they'd have to order one, no clue as to when it might appear. My suggestion that they could take one off a new car and put it on mine was not met w/much enthusiasm...

So in the end it took me like six months and three trips to those motherf'ers to get a new mirror.

may you have better luck...

i just changed mine yesterday. the dealers always stock the mirror. part is about 110, and insatll is about 40

sucks its a lot of money, but thats your only choice. And by the way, if you think you can live without the auto dimming, soon enough, the friction of the mirror will get low enough that the mirror will move around on its own.

I have my dimmer turned off always. No need with 15% tint.

Same here but I've got 35% in the rear window.

I still use the dimmer where a tractor trailer gets on my ass though.
