rear view mirror

The rear view mirror on my 2001 CLS broke - I was able to get a new one at Suunyside Acura but was surprised to find that replacement is not intuitive. Called Sunnyside and they tell me they break windshields replacing mirrors cause it needs to be hammered off!! Is this for real! Anyone have a more positive view of this problem!!

Are you trying to install the mirrow yourself? Did they/you break the windshield? I don't understand?

rear view mirror

I'm sorry, my frustration got the better of me. I thought that, like in most sensibly engineered vehicles, a rear view mirror would be easy to install myself. When I went to replace the broken mirror, I realized it was not immediately clear how one removed the mirror which comes as a one piece unit. I called Sunnyside Acura where I had purchsed the mirror ($73.00). The parts guy checked with two techs who told him that one can easily bust a windshield removing the old mirror as it is necessary to use blunt force on it to knock it off its fitting. He said one tech likes to use a hammer and punch for the job.

I tried a couple of half hearted swings with a hammer and punch, but the image of me sitting in a pile of windshielf stopped me from being more forceful. I was hoping someone out there might give me more specific advice on the job or share with me why the japanese make something that breaks easily but can't be easily fixed!

Why not just bring it back to the dealer and have them fix it? If it isn't under warranty, I just say suck it up and bring it to them. Easier that way (so I'm lazy, bite me :p )
