Question for Jens / NOS

Jens, if you don't mind me picking you brain a little more. Whats your opinion of the CL-S ability to handle the extra stress of a 50 or 75 shot of NOS on an occasional basis (I would say maybe 4-8 a month). Ive read on here people saying our tranny is underrated but you are prob. the only person on here who has actually opened one up.

I know using NOS I am putting the engine and tranny in my own hands but I do not want to argue for hours about a light switch that goes out a year from now. So can someone actually tell that I have used NOS on the engine once Ive removed the system?

Also Ive read that some engines can't handle the extra heat of even a little NOS. Whats the Type S engine made out of? Are the heat levels already pushing the limits of the metal?

And last but not least I want to thank you for your (and Waynes) presence on this board. I wish my local dealer was as responsive as you two are. I think it is a sad fact that with the number of Acura dealers in the US and the number of Acura drivers on this board that only one dealership in the country has a presence on this board.

Thanks again

Aysle,
Let me start by saying that transmissions by and large are longer repaired if and when the internals fail,so unfortuanately I cannot give you an honest assesment of how strong the trans really is.In todays dealers most will simply use services such as "Howards" that supply completely remanufactured units. It is really not worth it for us to build them as they have gotten so complex and time consuming to rebuild that it makes more financial sense for both the dealer and the customer to use outside vendors for remanufactured transmissions.
As far as I know and from what I have both heard and read the transmissions seem to pack it in at about the 360 horsepower level, torque is also a big factor in this. You will notice that the MDX trans is considerably different to handle the extra torque the MDX delivers even though it is based on the same trans.NOS is a neat thing,it is cheap easily installed and works alarmingly well. However there are a number of things to watch out for.Number one is fuel supply,it absolutely imperative that the engine have a sufficient means of getting enough fuel in order to prevent damage from running lean.Another biggie is the quality of the install itself, the use of high quality valving switch gear fuel lines etc. must be observed or else damage can result. In the past cars such as the Civics Integras etc have been shown to withstand incredible amounts of power increase thanks to things like turbos superchargers nitrous and such but you have to remember there were a lot of blown motors as well as people tried to see what the limits were on these engines.Since the engine in the current generation CL is fairly new it remains to be seen how much it will take before it fails.
This requires experimentation and if you elect to try this I would suggest that you go with a 50 shot and keep a very close eye on the drivetrain to see if it will take it.Untill this car gets into the hands of enough people willing to try this approach you are unfortuanately on your own along with a few other brave souls willing to go the distance with this. Here where I work nitrous is largely frowned upon and we will not install the stuff. As you can imagine working for a dealer does limit what we can do.
If you do want to go for it buy only the best equipment and take your time installing it,if you are not the gearhead type then shop around and find someone who has done this who can show you some cars so you can see the quality of the work they can provide.
Although I can only give you my own opinions here you can pretty much rrest assured that warranty service will be a huge issue in the event things go wrong.Jens

Great explanation, Jens!! I, too, would like to express my appreciation that you and Wayne are on board with us (no pun intended). We probably don't say it enough but you guys are the absolute best!

I do have a couple questions about your response. If someone were to put on a 50 shot and "keep a very close eye on the drivetrain to see if it will take it" what exactly does that mean? What do we look for in the behavior of the drivetrain? What are some ways that problems can manifest themselves?

TIA!

Rest assured, the front motor mount engine bracket will rip right off the rubber isolator after a few 1-2 WOT NOS assisted upshifts....

As far as a fifty shot....what constitutes a 50 shot???? Remember, when it picks up 50HP on a Dyno, that is the jet required for a 50 shot. So many people overkill the jet size, think they have a 40 and in fact have a 75...so be careful and start very small.
