Question on .................
Cruising RPM. What is the average or normal RPM for a 6spd doing about 80MPH? Beacuse tach is up about 2700RPM at that speed and it seem somewhat high for a V6 of this size. Should I worry about the issue? Yes, I do have the car in 6 th gear when traveling at that speeeed.

funny you ask... I was going to post the same question. my car (5AT) is at 2250 rpm at 80 mph exactly. the reason i asked is because i was thinking "shit, if i had another gear... id be at 2000 rpm" i guess thats not the case. i am curious as to what others say it is

80 mph @ 2900 RPM sounds about right (6th gear). Lower rpms will just be harder for the engine to keep up at higher speeds.
Automatic transmitions have larger ratios per gear. They will handle the torque converter automatically. Press the gas at 5th gear and u will see the rpms jumping by 1000 rpms to gain power, then coming back to 2300 or so (when depressing).
On manual transmissions, u will need to shift to 5th in order to gain more power.
My altima, which is automatic, does 80 mph @ 3100 rpms or so. It has only 4 gears. Higher rpms offsets the lack of power.

Hi folks! I'm new here and this looked like a good place to jump in.
I bought a 2001 CL Type S about a month ago. I love it! The "chubby" has yet to go down...hehehe
Anyhow I was wondering about my RPMs. I do a lot of city type driving. I have the AT and drive with it in D5 and I notice it hardly ever tachs above 2000. I spent the last few years in an Integra 1.8DOHC that was AT as well and ran at much higher RPMs.
Am I hurting my engine taching so low in my city driving conditions? I have started driving around in D4 in slower conditions. Should I do this? Opinions?

actually my gf's tl s get better highway mileage than 6 6sp, However shorter gears translate to more acceration. this is why the 6sp guys are on average .4/sec faster than the autos, with the right driver. I love my 6, but will admit I would like to get the fuel economy she gets.

It is unusual but the 6 speed specs always have stated lower gas mileage than the automatics. I don't mind, I may not be as efficient as a computer shifting, but I'm having more fun!
Mine also tachs at about 27-2800 rpm at 80 mph. Yea! baby.
