Proper headlight height?

I know where the screw is to adjust the height, but what exact height should the cutoff be at? One of mine is really off from a dumb bodyshop, and the other is off because I lowered it recently. Most cars i've owned had it in the manual what height to have the beam at, but ours just says go to the dealer.

I personally set mine up so that they shoot straight out. Go out to a dark level road or parking lot. When I stand directly in front of the light, I note where the cutoff is on my leg amd that becomes my reference point. As I walk away from the car, if the light goes above the spot when I stand directly in front of the light, I know it's too high and lower it. If it drops too much from my reference point, I raise them. The cutoff is pretty clean so level or just below level works for me and I don't get flashed from oncomming traffic.

That'll be a big help to me too. I just parted out my suspension and I need to re-adjust the head lights. They are not too bad, but they could be better.

The general requirement is that lights should shine 2-5 inches below headlight level at 20 feet on level ground.

I have always used this as a guideline and it works just fine.
