Power Steering Rack and Pinion Failure

Power Steering Rack and Pinion Failure
The car developed a grinding and snapping noise that has gotten worse in the last week. I took the car to the dealer on 9/27 and he orderd a new power steering rack an pinion. The dealer had no clue as to what would cause the failure. The part, with overnight delivery, should arrive on 9/28, but the dealer says he won't finish the repair until 10/1. Has anyone else had the problem?
I am driving a POS Chevy Cavalier loaner that groans and wheezes but gets me around as long as I am in no hurry.

Most cars nowadays utilize rack and pinion it is light efficient and very simple in design. To date I have not seen any failures of this sort but there is always a first for everything. And hey any car even a POS Cavalier is better than no car at all.Jens
