Power Steering?

Hello All,

Today I noticed my power steering was a bit stiff. It actually felt like I did not have power steering at all. I checked the fluid and its filled to the upper level and I have also replaced my power steering belt already.

I was wondering what it could be? Maybe the power steering pump? I looked aroud but could not find an answer. Any information would be appreciated.

Did it go back to normal or is it still stiff? Was the pump making any more noise than usual?

Thanks for the reply, it does seem stiff. would the steering have anything to do with the bushings. My bushings have been making some squeeky noises lately.

Have all your ball joints checked. Its a long shot but that could part of the problem. Check the power steering reservoir with the engine running and make sure fluid is flowing through it aggressively. You will see it moving quickly in and out of the tank sloshing all over the tank with the engine idling.

If the fluid is flowing quickly and you are still having the problem you may need to have the steering rack rebuilt. It costs like $20 in seals and your time to remove the rack and change all the seals. If you dont know your way around tools it isnt for you. Bottom line, you need to have a professional look at it. There is nothing we can do without looking at the car.

Hi Jproy,

The power steering fluid is swirling around in the reservoir. I think I am going to take it into my mechanic and have him take a look at it. I really appreciate the feedback. Thanks

Was it extra cold outside? Wait until everything's warmed up before judging if there's a problem.
