Anyone else read about this in the Wall Street Journal Sunday Edition?

Only the auto. The manual does not.

That’s the one and only incentive to buy the manual over the auto.

So why is the 4-speed auto corvette not be taxed but the GTO is?

Shawn S 03-01-2004 11:29 AM

I drove the 6-Speed GTO the other weekend.
The thing is a FUKIN BLAST with GOBS of torque down low !!!

I can’t see how anyone would buy a slush box in this car, but I guess there’s always that one speed-freak with a bad leg or lack of coordination to drive a manual.

Corvette is made from Tupperware :D so it’s LIGHTER so it gets better MPG’s.

gto2050 03-01-2004 11:35 AM

There are a lot of auto GTO's on the dealer lots too!

The dealer told me only 5-10 percent were coming in with Auto, but I read an article that said the number is more like 50% (of 18,000 total) will be built that way.

not all inclusive,,, some of us have shifted for thirty years and are just plan sick of being in traffic for two hour commutes doing endless shifting and not going over 40 mph... that said why is GM putting a four speed auto in this... DID THEY EVER HERE OF THE NEW FIVE SPEED OR EVEN SIX SPEED AUTO'S,, sorry cap got locked by mistake..anyway what a cheap way out for GM.

bigman 03-01-2004 12:16 PM

The manual will outperform the auto in stock form, but start adding power to both cars and a high stall converter to the auto and the auto will be running the manual anyday. Hell even from the factory the auto with just a converter will faster than a manual, or just about dead even. Why do you think most GM guys with tons of power prefer the auto. That GM auto is a bullet proof design that can andle a lot of power. It even does 4-2 and 3-1 downshifts.

Heh, that's funny you guys are bashing on the 4L60E/4L80E transmission. It is one of the best automatic transmissions ever built with the widest range of applications available.

I'll take the 4L60E over the 5-speed shitbox in my TL-S any day of the week. My '97 Tahoe had an 4L60E in it and I never ever had the slightest hint of transmission trouble. When we got rid of it with 120,000 miles, we only had done one transmission fluid change. Now my dad's XL Denali has the 4L80E transmission and it's rock solid, too.

I bet you guys didn't even know that GM indeed did make a 5-speed transmission -- in the CTS. The 5L60E. And I bet you didn't know that the last generation BMW 5-series used a GM automatic transmission. Yeah, it's that good.

Face it. GM's interior quality might not be up to Acura standards, but GM is lightyears upon lightyears ahead of Acura in mechanical engineering and that includes the transmission and the engine. Does LS1 ring a bell, anyone? I don't see Acura cranking out 350+ hp and still getting 30+ mpg on the highway. Shit, I only get 22 mpg when I drive like a grandpa and I' missing two cylinders.

I'm not bashing the auto tranny from a design standpoint, robustness, etc.

All I'm saying is why in the heck would you get a car like that in an auto.

You know that I meant it in general. :) I don't count the GTO as a step forward to GM's interior design quality, though. Regardless of the badge it's wearing, it's still much a Holden. We should compliment on Holden's interior design quality. Unless GM bring over Holden's interior designs over here, this is just one-time thing as far as nice interior goes.

More than half of the fastest LS1's in the world are automatics. With a torque converter and like 3800 stall, you're already on par with a stick driven by an excellent driver. Not to mention there's no chance of mis-shifting, and more consistent in the 1/4-mile. Manual is not always the best. It is fun to drive, yeah, but I would hate to have a stick at 8 AM on I-696. Or in any traffic jam! Or if I'm really serious about drag racing in the 1/4.

One of my friends with a 6-speed WS6 laughed at another WS6 one day because it had an automatic. "Ha, I can beat the hell out of that car." He has a fast car, but he doesn't know squat. I looked inside, saw a 6-point roll cage, extra gauges, and other tell-tale signs. And on the rear wheels, I saw fat Nitto 555R tires. I was like, "Uh, are you sure about that? Because I think this car will kick your ass."

Eh, just giving you a story. :D

CLpower 03-01-2004 01:04 PM

For those knocking the slush box, go drive it. I thought the same thing when my dad got the auto, the 4L60 is an AMAZING tranny, it shifts firm and fast and is strong as all knocks. Seriously, i've been thinking about gettign a C5 for my next car and i'll most liekly do the auto. I'd definately be able to drive the auto faster then I woul dever be able to drive the stick.

what's wrong w/ having a 4 speed auto?

that's right, nothing :P

that 4 speed auto gets better MPG then your 5 speed auto and it's a bigger engine ;)

I disagree considering the new corvettes interior is equally as nice :P

Until GM stops doing the corporate parts bin sharing for premium vehicles, I won't stop bashing on their interiors. The 50,000-dollar Vette has the exact same steering wheel as a 18,000-dollar Grans Am. The 55,000-dollar Denali has the same steering wheel as... all the other trucks in the company. I know parts sharing is critical in cost-savings, but it has gone too far.

when you are buying a 50,000$ car to compete w/ 100,000$ cars out there, you don't really worry about the interior :)

You have a good point, except 90% of the Vette owners don't give a squat about competing. They only want the status, just like 100% :D of the BMW and Mercedes drivers. Just joking. ;)

CLpower 03-01-2004 01:41 PM

also, I will say, I've probably put 8,000 miles personally on our family vette and you'd be AMAZED at how comfortable the car is, esp. on road trips. A lot more comfortable then my dads 00 s500 was :)

and even if they buy it as a status symbol, it's competition is still in the 80-120,000$ range.
